Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

No chickens don't get colds . They suffer with upper respiratory issues though. There are the obvious contagious diseases that will present with these symptoms but there can be other contributing factors, worms, egg binding , coccocidiosis , DE, ammonia rising from their unrates when they are the perch at night. Any of these can cause upper respiratory symptoms. I generally start by treating for worms but I wouldn't rule out cocci if I were you. What's her poop look like?

we seem to go through little phases where they get sneezy but they pass and everything is fine. She is out wandering now so will be keeping an eye on her.

I was only thinking on the weekend it was time to nag DS (who gets extra pocket money for chook jobs) to clean under their perch as it looks like its been a bit forgotten, that might be might first thing to do today. It got wet in there in the rain last week so I'll pull it all out and replace in case it didnt dry I think. That might be where our problem lies. Trust it to be on a school day so I have to do it not DS

I wormed them about 3 weeks ago and Ive not seen any poop out of the ordinary though Ive not seen her in particular go.

Now he is the first to put the heater on LOL

Ground oyster shell is calcium carbonate. Your average hen uses up 20 times more calcium than she has in her bones in her laying days. Calcium carbonate is more readily absorbed by the hen than any other product. Shell grit is a mixture of different shells and sand and yes the hen would be able to derive some calcium from it but it's much easier and more effective to buy a $3 bag of calcium carbonate /ground oyster shell and offer it as free take.
Over use of ACV can also lead to calcium deficiency as it can lower the calcium absorption rate.
Being as Pete doesn't have any chickens im kind of wondering why people would even ask for his advice.

Who knows he's a man and just thinks that because you have worked some where for 10 years means he must know everything. .. Epic fail on this one.
