Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sorry your cat was bitten. It sounds more like a tick to me than a snake. Paralysis and loss of voice is some of the first symptoms you will see in a cat affected by a tick. I have not heard of too many cats being bitten by snakes and surviving. If it was a snake he sure is one lucky little fella. I understand why people don't like snakes for sure especially if they have had an animal bitten or lost to a snake but i try to remember that is this their home too and they were here before we were. If a snake was about to attack one of my pets would i kill it... Sure I would..

I'd have to agree, sounds more like paralysis tick to me. Be mindful that your kitty might relapse. I bottle of injectable vitamin C will cost you around $18 and a needle and syringe a couple of dollars . We keep vit C in the fridge at all times and even administer after the animal is in a coma . I've seen a goat go down after snake bite and be back up and around 5 hrs later. It's $5000 for 2 doses of the antivenin for a dog and my chances of getting a vet here in time are zero. If you are in snake country you should research it .

5 grand?? Must be a huge dog! My mum paid $800 all up for 1 anti venom plus drip, a night at vet and after hours fee.

$2500 per injection. There is only one antivenin here in tassie and they use on all snake bites. Last year 2 of our friends dogs were bitten but they only managed to save 1 . The thing that irks me is that the the hospitals donate the antivenin once it is passed it's use by date, as they don't make antivenin for animals. Some dogs will die from anaphylactic shock anyway. I've seen at least a dozen horses die from snake bite in my neighbourhood . We only have 3 types of snake in tassie.

I was thinking a tick, but all the vets I talked to seemed certain it was a snake though. Plus there's a little one living around the shearing shed.
Vet also said that it's dehydration and exposure that kills them, and not venom. If you can get to them you just have to keep them hydrated and comfortable.
Thanks for the advice though Fancy, but if it relapses I'll take him to the vet with that knowledge.
While I agree with your sentiments towards snakes Satay, I just can't tolerate them (browns) around the house or sheds.
If they're down the paddock, creek or up in the hills then they're fine by me. If they weren't one of the worlds deadliest snakes then they wouldn't bother me.

That makes sense. They did tests to see which anti venom to use. Why cant they just have 1 for each? Seems silly and expensive obviously

Looks great! we're going into our godless summer, wanna swap?
No thanks, I couldn't handle +40. My comfort level is around +25, then it starts to get too hot.

Hahaha my partner is great he tries to "teach" me how to do it. Despite the fact we're both mechanics lol actually makes sense now since he was the one I worked with while being an apprentice. Still thinks he's boss. Hmmmm

I try to teach the better half how to do things too, it's a lot easier to just ask her to nail something in with the nail gun while I hold it than to do everything myself, or have her cut everything up with the circular saw for me to assemble. I've tried the same approach with tire changes, I even try to tell her that I'm a feminist and I give her the equality of sexes speach, but still it's always me who gets to change them...

Our only poisonous snake is the European Viper, or adder or what you want to call it. The venom used to be around 1000 euros a pop (and that's what it cost the vet to buy it in), but now there's a new layer in the market that makes a similar product for 150 euros. But even that is pretty expensive, and they only have a shelf life of about a year, and you only get snake bites in the summer. Most dogs will make a full recovery with just some painkillers and added fluids, although they recover a lot quicker with the antivenom. Cats don't usually do as well, due to their smaller size, but they can come through it too. The problem with using specific antivenoms is that usually people don't know what bit their animal (or themselves). And running a diagnostic to find out what it was requires specialized equipment, and time. Usually it's important to get the antivenom in the animal quickly.

Yeah I get that. I guess each state and country is different. Smaller towns = less equipment.

as for tyre changing. That job sux lol the bending and lifting and the dirt blech one of the things I hate. I always wear gloves and have a good jack so makes it easier :-D

My babies are finally hatching!! This photo is Impatient (an Ara) who hatched a full 2 hours before any sibling, he was the first to pip as well. I'm intrigued about his colouring since the other Aras have been Blue or Black with dark legs. (I know he's pure too cause I got to look around the property when I got the eggs and there was only Aras in a variety of colours)

There's 4 FW Marans and 4 Aras out and fluffed and another Maran half unzipped. The 4 left have pipped holes but are resting right now I think. (hopefully they'll hatch later but I know they might not)

I did lose 1 Ara as he got over zealous when pipping and pipped through a blood vessel, I called out for help on my local fb page and followed their advice over the next 4 hours but sadly I think he just got too tired. He did try his best though.

I think myself and Harriet have done a pretty good job for our first time though. :) Other then when she pecked at Emergency in his egg but I think she knew he wouldn't make it and they are programmed to nip at red things.
