Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi Ellen, if you're up to it, I suggest getting one of those Brinsea Mini Eco incubators (probably around a hundred bucks) and hatching your own chicks. The kids get to learn about the process too. Only drawback is that not all might hatch, and you do usually end up with 50% roosters, so you need to be ready to either process or rehome those (although I think the processing part is a great learning experience for the kids too).

Hello and Welcome Ellen Aussie
Wow, how exciting to be starting out! Vehve’s suggestion is definitely a good one but it may also be a bit daunting if you are new to chickens and you will need a brooder etc for the chicks until they are big enough to move into their coop.

Where you get your new feathered friends from would depend on what type of chickens you would like to get; there are so many choices and also how far you are willing to travel.

Depending on the size and type of chickens you would like, quite a few Feed Stores have one day to one week old chicks and point of lay pullets. If you were thinking of something along the lines of bantams, Silkies etc probably best to check out breeders and you can also pick up specific breeds and/or barnyard mixes on Gumtree also.

Others may have more suggestions and if you have any questions about breeds or requirements, lots of helpful people on this thread and BYC in general.

Good luck with your new feathered family and please share photos and let us know how you are doing.

An update on the craziness here …. After cutting the cord on her bubs and trying to go broody but being locked out of the nest box Tina has now decided that her 7.5 week old bubs are, in fact, babies again and is now tooking away to them, calling them over and feeding them!

Got woken by frantic chickens at 04:40am and raced out half dressed to find across the road’s cat stalking them!

Listening to ABC Radio last night and the question being asked was “What does the G20 Summit mean to you?” I LOVE the G20 Summit because I get Friday off! Woo hooo. I work from home, I live on the Northside of Brisbane and while it seems silly that I get the day off, the boss reckons I am entitled to it and I should take it. No arguments from me!

Plus, a three day weekend gives me more time to work on the run extensions.

The downside, at this stage they are predicting 35C for Saturday and 38C Sunday! Ouch! Lots of extra TLC and heat busting tricks will be required for the gals.

Hello. I am finally ready to get my chickens, coop and back yard is ready.. So happy and excited.. I live in Queensalnd Gold Coast. Is there anyone with an idea of where I could get my chickens from. I'd like to get them young so they get to know the family as they grow. Thanks. Ellen

HI and :welcome Depending on the breed you want you can buy chickens at markets and produce stores etc. If you are wanting a particular breed there are a few of us that sell chickens. You can also try a few chicken for sale sites on facebook or try farmstock.

I think it is good you will be home this Friday. Our temps sure are going a little mad this week already. Last two days have been 36C and 37C and it is only supposed to get hotter form here. What does the g20 mean to me... Nothing. Was a bit creepy to hear Russia has 4 ships just outside of Australia's waters though.

Hey satay, yeah, those warships are a bit scary; apparently it is standard procedure with the Russian President. Just my humble, non political opinion but I will be happy when G20 is done and they are all gone. The whole 'threat' thing creeps me out; talk about painting a target!

Shows how much he is disliked if he thinks he needs that much protection... He really is a creepy man.. I agree with you though I will be glad when it's done and they are gone too.

I was talking to my brother about the g20 the other day as his job is he programmes and maintains the security cameras, the opening and closing of all airport doors, swipe cards and lighting. His boss has told him that if he gets called out to the airport he has to have 6 security guards with him at all times during the G20 summit. He doubts highly he will get called out as they estimate it will take him 2 hours to get from the southside of brissy to the international airport, normally at 20min drive from his house. He also does u.q where Obama will be speaking on Saturday actually most of the uni's and hospitals in s.e qld.

My babies are all here!!

11 healthy ones, 1 egg not fertile, 1 early quitter (was the size of a pea) and unfortunately a lost baby at hatching time (he pipped through blood vessel and even with help got too tuckered out to go on).

Not bad for both my broody and I not having a clue about what we were doing.
She's such a good Mumma, has taught them to scratch and gave them a worm, taught them how to dust bathe and how to groom. :') Let's them climb all over and under her and only got annoyed at one once cause it pulled out one of her tuft feathers.

There are 5 Aras, I think they're going to be 2 blacks, 1 lavender, 1 white and 1 blue.
6 FW Marans, 3 are yellow as expected but I'm not sure what the gingery ones are.
