Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

One determined mama!!

I've finally managed to break the last of my broodies, save for my SS who is nearly 2 week in to her sit on a dozen Marans from @satay

Go SS. I bet she is going to be the best mumma you can get. I can't wait til you have little marans running around.

I would love to give mine eggs but after the last time I'm very disheartened. She broke all of them :-(

Was it her first time broody? Sometimes it takes them a couple of goes to get it right. If you don't have a roo. I would get just a couple of cheap eggs from someone and let her try. Least if she breaks them again you haven't lost much. Forgot to ask how your drive went a few weeks ago? Did you get any pics?

My Dorking, first time sitter, broke 4 or 5 I think. I put it down to her inexperience as well.

My SS is a 4th time sitter, but this will be her first time hatching as well. She's going great so far. Usually I cordon off the nest box from the others with chicken wire or move them to a dog crate, but she didn't take the move at all with fake eggs so I've just left her be in the nest box she's chosen and haven't bothered to fence it off from the rest of the flock.
Every other day there's an egg under her that another hen has laid, but I take it out as it's very obvious with Marans eggs which ones stay put and which ones come out

Black ops (my son named her) broke 12 out of 12. 2 days before hatch last one broke. Was pretty upset over it. The bigger chickens are using the babies box as their nesting box so maybe it could work this time. Only 1 way to find out really

Black ops is a great name! Steve (my son named her) has a new game. It's sit in the nest box until a chick walks past, then leap out and peck. She can carry on with these ambushes for ages. I may need to borrow your name if this continues. ; )

Good luck with the new hatch!

Some birds are so protective that they ' muscle down ' on the eggs whenever the other birds enter the box. Next time she goes broody try separating her and her clutch of eggs from the rest of the flock.
