Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Yeah...about that. >.>

That's the latest rookie mistake I've made.  I had hens brooding eggs but I didn't isolate them from the rest of the chooks - so for about a week afterward, chickens kept climbing in and laying fertile eggs on top of my brooding hens.  So the spread of hatching dates is over about 10 days.  :/

That happens to all of us . So had this egg pipped externally before momma decided to help it along ? If so, we can assume that it should hatch over the next 12-24 hours. Being as you have a staggered hatch I would get that brooder set up anyway. Chances are momma will up and leave the others once she's had enough.

we have a few SA members. What breed chickens do you have ?
I have two Australorp hens, a New Hampshire pullet, a guinea fowl pullet and four mixed breed chicks i Acquired from my neighbor (not sure on breeds quite yet but one is a rooster..great). I am want to start breeding Australorps though.

It had pipped to the point you see it at in the photo when mumma pecked at it. She pecked through the exposed membrane. We have two hens brooding at the moment. One seems as though she's nearly had enough, the other is intently guarding the eggs. Hopefully we'll get the rest of the supplies for the incubator in a couple of days. Hopefully.

If you haven't already, I would read through the link on assisted hatching. Better to be prepared.

Fancy has given you great advice here. I would just say as she has if you left it in the brooder use wet paper towel around the outside or give it a mist. If the membrane gets to dry the chick will die. Next time your girls are sitting add and x to the eggs you want to hatch. Then you can remove the ones without marks each day.
