Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We've had a little rain overnight. How's this for drinking cups? Btw these are my chook pen shoes.

Fancy, You should enlarge these photos and frame them. That is super cute.

@tandykins , glad you found your chicken. I had a Golden Polish Crested disappear once. That little fireball was gone for a week. My neighbor called and said he had seen her down the road in a tree! He tried to call her, but she ignored him. Hubby took a feed bucket and as soon as she seen him she flew down and would not stop squawking. Poor thing had slept out there in freezing rain, snow, wind, but she was happy to be back home.

When I got my RIRs as chicks and knew bugger all about chickens, I messed up BADLY. I put them out in the yard in the middle of winter at 3 and 5 weeks old.

I came back out 10 minutes later to find both GONE. I found the 3 week old chick (Mira) huddled under an old piece of furniture but the 5 week old chick (Sophie) was nowhere to be found. I was sure she'd been taken by a predator.

I took Mira out every day to see if her cheeps would bring Sophie out of some some of hiding spot. My husband thought I was insane thinking it possible that Sophie could still be alive. A week later I have Mira out and lo and behold I hear a frantic cheeping coming from my garage and a no worse for wear Sophie comes running out to see us.

Since, I have spent hours every day learning everything I can about the proper care of chickens so that I do not make any obvious, horrific mistakes again.

Immediately after my last post I went out to check on the hens and chicks while my husband fixes up the coop. I saw a chick having pipped through (yay!) and almost immediately my hen who is brooding them pecked at the membrane of the egg and blood gushed out. She pecked at it again and again as I reached in and snatched up the now crying hatching chick. D:

How rude of that mumma! The bleeding stopped almost as soon as it started but with the presence of the blood I worried that she'd peck the chick to death.

Not having an incubator, I have put the egg in my brooder. I know that hatching chicks need sufficient humidity to complete their hatch. Is there anything I can do to help this little guy's chances of survival? :(

The chicks are getting bigger and fluffier everyday

Is the chick still in the shell?

But keep an eye on it of course
Will do. I'll see if my husband can rig up a temperature sensor in there so we can at least attempt to keep the temperature ideal. We ordered parts for an incubator that I was hoping would have arrived today but they have not. :(

It looks (to me) as if the bleeding is from a shallow wound and stopped almost immediately, so I hope that doesn't drastically effect the chick.
