Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Just curious. Why Buttface? XD

The 9 year old son of my neighbour was over one day. I told him that she (a Silver Laced Wyandotte) was the only chicken (at the time) with no name.

He said, "You should name her Buttface."

And so I did.

That neighbour feels eternally ashamed that I stuck with it. XD

Tandy, sorry to hear of your troubles :(

Satay, what is this sexing of Marans at 2 weeks you speak of? I'm still not seeing any significant differences in ours at 4 weeks (although they're probably all roos).

No lawn mowing here at the moment, I did spend an hour and a half on Monday sweating like a pig clearing out all the snow from the driveway and parking lot.

From about 2 weeks on for fw marans you will see the shoulder colour coming in. If it's light brown girl, black a boy.

The chicks in the brooder are doing very well. They cried for hours until I realized that the fan in the room (just to keep air circulating) was freaking them out. I turned it off and they now spend most of their time quietly cuddling under the brooder lamp - but for the occasional, "TIME TO EXPLORE!" burst of activity.

Having gone out this morning, I discovered another chick mid-hatch. It looks like it's nearly done. One wing is out, it's flexing quite energetically in the shell and is very loud!

How is everyone this morning?

I keep getting soft shelled eggs cos they wont eat anything but chick starter. And of clearly not eating the calcium. Cant put it in water cos of the chicks. Roll on may so they can all be on layer pellets.

Maybe try scrambling a bunch of eggs and adding in the finely crushed shells?

As for my broody...well, obviously I should have come here much sooner. The day I came here looking for advice is the day she finally got over it. All of a sudden she's back, and the other two have immediately stopped picking on her. Win!

They really should be on a well balanced feed. Calcium and phosphorus levels are not only important for hens when laying but also for adequate bone growth.
What is the calcium content in the starter ?
