Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Welcome, newcomers!

Tandykins, you are doing a great job, don't let the haters get you down.

I popped into work yesterday before the term starts, and the last of our Isas died over the holidays. Not a bad run...I think she was nearly 4. As to the other chooks, the last four have all been inherited by a student who keeps getting chicks that surprisingly get too big for her Kings Cross balcony. One of them is particularly attractive, and I wouldn't be surprised if she is a he...lots of gorgeous, blue/black droopy tail feathers and a biggish comb. Nobody has hard any crowing yet, so I think the plan is to wait, plead ignorance if someone complains and if it is, indeed a He, rehome him! (hopefully)
I'll try to get some photos next week, as I'd really like to know what one of the ladies' breed is...she's quite unusual looking.

Our school had a rooster before someone stole all the chickens (twice!). Nobody complained. Even if it is I'd just keep it as long as he is safe round the kids or till an actual complaint came :)

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I must admit to feeling a tad excited to have my "girls" coming home this weekend ... in fact Saturday ... thankfully it's very busy at work so tomorrow should go quickly.

Got 3.5 eggs today lol the new layer is laying on the roost so they keep getting smashed. 1 is nearly square and another with no shell. Which I'm guessing is mummas which would explain why they aren't perfect.

And 1 chook has decided the compost bin is a great laying spot. Never a dull moment around here!

We love pics.
I'll try but not promise as I often forget to take them.
Here's one of our baby puppy checking out the chicks, he was absolutely fascinated with them (he was 11 weeks old when this was taken), he didn't want to chase or anything and was easily distracted but went back, sat down and watched them calmly. I will be training him to come into the chook yard with me, eventually off lead.

I came home from picking up this boy - an unwanted rescue. A 700km round trip to pick up this sweet, 19 week old lovey boy who chirrups when I talk to him...to find an RSPCA notice on my front door. Apparently someone called the RSPCA regarding the welfare of my chickens. I called and left a message with my number, or suggested that the officer come by whenever they like - as they were more than welcome to come and see my chickens.

-_-

Now I'm racking my brain over what the complaint was about. There are a grand total of 2 half-legitimate complaints I can think of. There's a large rubbish pile at the end of our driveway that we've been stacking up to go to the tip this weekend - and there are a couple of exposed screws inside their coop which really need to be cut off but have not caused any problem.

Other than that - I'm wondering if the neighbour who expressed concern over me treating Bumblebee myself rather than taking her to the vet called because she - honestly? - doesn't know much about chickens.

Either way - I came home pre-annoyed and immediately became super-annoyed. Now I'm going to crack open a bottle of wine and fix up the temporary cage for this sweet boy. Then tomorrow I get to get his quarantine pen set up.

On another note - I will not, in future, mention quarantine to people I'm picking up chickens from. The woman I go this cockerel from almost didn't want to give him to me because she felt that a minimum of 2 weeks quarantine was "needlessly cruel". Know what's needlessly cruel? Tossing chooks together only to have them all die of a mysterious illness. -_-

I'm tired. And really angry.

I have a German shepherd too.
