That's exciting & sounds promising! How old is she? I saw one of my ara's rearrange a few pieces of straw in the nest box today but as she's only 15 weeks old she is obviously getting in some early practice. I'm looking forward to blue/green egg pics.![]()
Welcome Kooka! Talk about trial by fire for your first foray into hatching! I hope hings run smoothly from now on & at least you now know hen 4 is a good mum.Hi
I am near Woodend in Victoria and have GL Wyandotte hens, and 11 bought chicks, a mixed mob bought as part of a succession plan that went horribly wrong due to my lack of knowledge on things brooding. It was tragic comedy capers for a while with hens quitting on me, eggs going cold and finally hatching/rescuing one of three eggs with the help of a table lamp and a plastic storage box.
All the while slaving over construction of an A frame portable........ 4.2M long...........![]()

Well the girls had access to the outside world today, albeit fully fenced but gives impression of great space for them. They're relaxing more today. They also use the roosting area both at night and on occasion during the day. One has decided on top of the nesting boxes is her place to snooze.
Have been able to gently approach and pick up an occasional girl, but have only done this once today as I don't want to cause any upset for them.
Contacted a friend on Facebook who also has chooks (forgot she had them until I saw a video of hers today) who's invited me to a few chook forums there too, so will have a look see what they're about as some seem to be for a specific breed where another seems to be general/learning.
I'm still getting fart eggs, I'm pretty sure from the silkie. That's I think six in the last few months and that's with the break in laying while she brooded. Do you think it means anything of concern?
