They are Araucana. Pretty good looking ones

Question oh wise ones. How do I get the girls to roost instead of sleeping in the nest box. They aren't laying yet so I want to get on top of it now! I'm going to add a couple more roosts at different heights tomorrow but I don't know what else to do, it's only a temporary coop till the permanent one is built, there's not much space, roosting and nests only

Go out after dark each night and move them to the roosts. They'll get the hang of it

She's hanging in there, but I think I'm going to take her to be euthanased this afternoon. I can see organs through the tears and (I know this is gross) but she has some maggots in the wound too. She's not interested in food anymore, so I think the kindest thing for her is put her out of her misery.

I'm very fond of SS's. I might pick up some day olds (I have a broody Orpington) or purchase a pullet a bit later.

In other news, my new pup was born last night

OHHH! They are super cute! 9 or 10? Reminds me of 101 dalmatians! I may buy more too. Depends. I don't know if I'm ready to give up on them yet or not.

When my partridge cochin got attacked, you could see her insides through a small hole also. It was gross and I was prepared to sew it up, but I was lucky it was winter here, so I didn't have to worry about flies getting to her. We did have to cull a cockrell one time when the flock decided to eat his rear end off. The flies got to him and maggots were falling from his backside, therefore the chickens were following him around and furthermore trying to eat him alive. The maggots were already inside him and were eating him alive. I tried to cage him up, but decided he was suffering.

x2. This is what we have had to do. I think it usually takes less than a week of doing that. Unless your chickens are stubborn

you can put in a board thru the center of the boxes and is on a swivel and before night fall when they should roost them just pull the bars up...in the morning put them down...problem solved...hope this helps

I love that BBR rooster, if Wellington doesn't work out as a flock leader...but I'll feel guilty if I have to cull him, since he trusts me .

Yes my poor Snitzel had maggots in her rear end too. She went to chooky heaven last night. Vet said I made the right decision as she had an abscess that burst and was all pus and infection in there.
While I am sad, she's not suffering any more. I've had a lovely lady contact me offering me another SS when her little chicks are able to be sexed. They are such beautiful birds, there will be a hole for a while in the flock without an SS.

My chooks are more likely to roost if it is higher than the nesting boxes....they tend to go to the highest point. You can either close the nesting boxes off in the afternoon so they don't get in or you can lift them out after dark and put them on the roost....they will learn quickly!
