C8yJayne I can’t really offer any more suggestions for moving your broody than have already been given and seen as I am 2 days behind the times, you have probably already moved her … I just wanted to say that I hope it went well.

Aaaaw satay I am so sorry to hear about your little Pekin

Steampunked yeah, I remember when I had a set of Encyclopaedia … I love the internet and all it’s knowledge.

Sometimes my rambling posts have a purpose and I do share my experiences in the hope that they may help someone else. In the chicken world I am still very much a newbie.

I am sorry to hear your little grey silkie turned out to be a boy .. I still miss my little Spot who was a beautiful silver/grey silkie but sadly, also a boy.

Fancy those pictures are adorable and congrats on stepping in at the right time.

Sam I love your spring chicken!

Anniebee you are not alone on the weird chicken front!

So, why another mid week post from me?

Well, as it turns out, I am up early and have some spare time. Why am I up early? Remember Dusty, the chicken plucked from the brink of death just days ago? Apparently she is feeling better, so much so that she is crowing about it! Yep, got woken up this morning by yet another of my 2 year old, egg laying hens having a crow attempt!

Dem chickens sure do be crazy!

Also, just wanted to share this … remember me saying I was wary of the Crows around here with chicks?

I heard a strange sound during the week while working and the girls were raising the alarm so, of course, I went out to investigate. A Crow had a juvenile Turtle Dove pinned down, had removed quite a few of it’s feathers and was trying to 1. eat it alive and/or 2. fly off with it!

As much as Turtle Doves are a pest, stealing seed etc, I could not stand by and watch this poor little one be eaten alive by a Crow, so I chased the Crow off. The little fella was bleeding pretty badly but I picked it up and popped it under the foliage next to the tree.

The Crow came back looking for it!

I kept an eye on the Dove during the day and while it could not fly, it was wandering around a little and drinking from the fish pond. It was kinda sad in that it’s Mum kept coming down from the tree, trying to encourage it to fly up.

By evening I thought the poor little thing was going to end up spending the night on the ground. I had been watching him for a while, turned my back to look at something else, turned back and he had gone … couldn’t see him anywhere. It was too quick for anything to have taken him or for him to have walked out of sight so I can only hope that he managed to jump/fly back into the tree.

Of course that does mean that he will be back one day to become another pesky, parasite carrying, food stealing critter!

Anyways, as mentioned, this was a juvenile dove with flying abilities and it would be at least 4-5 times bigger than a baby bantam.

My suspicions of these Crows around my chicks are definitely warranted and I will be keeping a very close eye on both my chicks (if/when they hatch) and also the evil Crows who appear to have taken up residence!

Your suspicions of crows are well grounded, we don't have crows as such, ours are Ravens and I've seen them pester mother duck all the while his buddies are picking the ducklings off one by one. They even go into the coops here and steal eggs that are not from hatch. Death birds I call them.
Annie B you are in good company here, if I documented my daily exchanges with the animals here people would surely think I was crazy. :)

:lau I am sure my neighbours think I am. If they hear me out there in the morning chatting to Tyson about how he is the most stunning ram ever put on the planet or the ever beautiful belly, and that's not including all the chicken chatter.:lau

Hello, New member from mount gambler, South Australia.

Does anyone know where I can get Blue Australorp Bantams and any Lavender bantams as fertile eggs in here in the land of oz ?.

I have  also heard of place that can ship Day old chicks around. does anyone here actually know a breeder that does this ?

From a nice pic to a not so nice pic......One of my roosters did not make it to the coop last night. This is what I woke up to see out my kitchen window. By the way, he is fine now

We got hit with about 6" of snow last night. Snow and freezing rain. Poor guy had shook his head several times already to get the snow off. Guess my birds are tough!

[/quote] Wow, do you have problems with frostbite ? We were on flood watch last night, hasn't been much rain here but apparently quite a bit out on the northwest coast.
