The chooks are gutsy around here. I gave the dogs a lamb bone each and one of the coronation sussex hens stood up to the ridge back for hers. The ridgey backed away then snatched and ran with it with the hen and King george in hot pursuit . Where's the camera when you need it?

They all seem to be amazingly, crazily tough. On the weekend, while I was digging a new garden bed - I like to hallucinate I could be self-sufficient - one saw off a kookaburra over a witchetty grub.

I wouldn't do that! The chook did.

Haha, I would imagine that many mere morsels of food have meant the demise of many chooks.

Sounds like that is one chicken who should not have crossed the road [sorry, couldn't help myself] but she is very lucky that you saved her; kudos to you.

Was she just walking down the road?  I live in Boondall and in my travels, I have only noticed one other person with chickens and they live on Roghan Road; was she anywhere near there?

Maybe get in touch with the Boondall Vet and let them know you have her, just in case someone may ask there?

Rosey was in Lyndhurst just scratching down the footpath - I had to give her a name even if only temporarily. There is construction and road works in the street at the moment so was worried she'd get hurt.

I was going to ring the vet today but got side tracked once I got to work. Another job for tomorrow. I left messages with people living near where I picked her up. People in Queenstown and Landsboro Avenues have poultry too. And there is a cockerel that pops into my yard as well but I think he escaped dinner. I see him hanging around a vacant house in the same street - but haven't been able to catch him. He looks Rhode Island Red.

How have your girls been coping with the Mosquitos? They have been bad.

I like your tag - and so very right about a chook wanting breakfast. My head hen actually crows like a rooster if not fed by 6am.

I did not realise there were that many chickens around here! I thought I heard a rooster crowing one morning but only the once.

Yeah, the mosquitos have been bad this year! The girls just eat them! The gold fish in the ponds have a nice feed also.

The Dusty Main Event Molt continues and she now has minimal feathers on her chest, back, legs and now today .. neck!

They are not flattering but they do show just how many feathers she has lost.




Also, not only do we have black feathers in the fish ponds, on the fence, on the deck and all over the lawn, LuLu was wandering around this afternoon with a couple of black feathers hanging off her!

So, on the evening of Day 20 we have 5 bubbies!! No pips in the remaining three eggs but seen as Cilla is not going to be moving around tonight, these three have been left where they are until tomorrow; just to give them a chance.

I managed to get some pictures of some of them this afternoon but in light of Sidhe13’s sad news, I did not think it appropriate to share right now.

Thanks for the condolences. I think in spite of my best intention, because there was only one, I got a bit attached. And I know better than to get attached in the first 48hrs, but babies are always harder.

I will clean up the brooder and incubator tomorrow and have a wee break before we try again. Better luck next time...

One of my girls laid a seriously HUGE egg today! There is even a wee band around the middle where the 2 halves of the shell meet. I will post some pics in a moment!
They are all only young girls...less than a year old...but this is the fourth massive egg we have had. One hen lays slightly larger eggs as a norm but today's egg was ridiculous!

The ring around the middle is known as a ' check mark ' caused by stress in the chamber.
Large eggs unfortunately increase the chances of egg binding, one of my gold laced wyandotte occasionally lays triple yokers.

From my research I have found that it all comes down to diet. A good quality pellet with a calcium level no greater than 3 % ( 2% if you have Roos ) and protein around 17%. Calcium should always be available on ' free take '.
