Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hey Fancy yep, the weather is definitely a bit on the strange side at the moment.

Oh dear about the fire alarm, if that was me and I had hubby with me, there would have been no going back; he would have cracked them and gone elsewhere!

Hhhm, I didn’t think of a dog but then the girls probably would have raised the alarm and they were quiet today.

All free ranges, regardless of weekday afternoon or all day on the weekend are supervised by both or one of us. If we are not outside, they are not out of their run. I do not trust the neighbourhood pets ever or the Crows while KiKi and Crystal and still on the small side.

The girls got off to bed OK and are safely locked in and the cats seem to be OK now

Hopefully whatever it was has gone away

Hopefully the normal returns and stays Teila.

Deej the austrolorp is one determined broody ! My girl sat despite failed attempts to ' break ' it for 4 weeks so I gave in and gave her eggs. Then she hatched a dozen. I had the Bator and brood pens ready but didn't need them.

Ask Satay. She has a dozen or two "Bush babies " a year from her determined mumma Aussie lol she still manages to out fox and hide a nest !

Love the pics Ash

She does indeed miss oz. I have 7 aussies and there is only the one that must try to hide her eggs each season. As sam said she usually does out smart me.

Good to hear the bubs are doing OK Deej211

Sidhe13 good news from you also.

I just had the most bizarre experience … I am sharing because if something does happen, it will not be hindsight.

Every day, 03:30-04:00pm without fail, the gals start pleading to go for a free range and Chimee (cat) starts biting, scratching and pleading to go into her play run outside.  We cannot actually say “outside’ around her at any time and have to call it the O-word because she gets so excited.  Syba does go outside into the run but does not get quite as excited as Chimee.

Today, nothing!  Asked Chimee if she wanted to go outside and she ran away and hid under the bed.

OK, not that she has done that before, but wrote that off as one of those things.  Then, I realised the gals had not been pleading.

Went outside to let them out; not moving out of the run!  I went and got some meal worms and sat in the usual meal worm doling spot, Dusty came over but the two other big gals just ran out of their run and into the broody run with Cilla and the bubs .. no way Cilla was coming out.  After two worms, Dusty left and went into the run with the others, at great speed.  Eventually, after half an hour, everyone came out but they were super spooked and kept running back.

I went inside to see what the cats were doing and they were both sitting in the laundry, not usual, pretty much doing nothing.

At this point, I am starting to freak out .. what the?!

Cold?   I don’t think so, as it has been like this for 3 days now and everyone was fine the last two.  Also the chickens are in their run, not like they are hiding in the coop.  Syba (other cat) does not do cold so sitting on the cold laundry tiles is not the norm for him.

Maybe the gals saw a Hawk (never seen one in the 5 years we have lived here) but that does not explain the cats.

If there is one of the neighbours cats around, the gals are quick to raise the alarm and they had not raised the alarm at all today.

I couldn’t see or hear anything in the garden out of the ordinary .. freaky stuff!

Being as this isn't a country prone to earthquakes i would say you had a visitor of the canid variety...either a dog or a fox. Or maybe a larger feral cat.

Good morning all

Well, everything seems OK this morning, cats are normal and the girls appear to be settled enough.

Thanks for your input also … suggestions of a dog, cat, rat etc are all good points except any time something along those lines comes around, the girls let me know pretty quickly by raising the alarm.

Over the road’s dog visited, they let me know before he even got within cooee of them; when Mr Ibis came to steal my goldfish, again they let me know also when the bush turkey visited; the presence of a visiting Bobtail Goanna was also advertised quite loudly. They are definitely more inclined to raise the alarm than cower.

Because of their superior sense of hearing, I am wondering if both the cats and gals heard something that I didn’t.

I will probably never know what it was but it was kinda freaky to see everyone so spooked and me having no idea … I did contemplate finding a door frame el pronto to stand under
