I am absolutely no expert by any means, and don't think I could recognise an egg bound chicken .... but another thought crossed my mind - so I googled " constipation in chickens " ... and apparently they do get that .... below here is a link you might consider ... and there's plenty on BYC as well about constipation, although many of those morph into the obvious questions of also being egg bound.

http://www.olyfarmstead.org/olive-oil-enema-for-chicken-constipation/

Found in my rummaging around on the net, someone said near a warm fire to relax the vent, and a long warm bath - an hour ?? ( no soap ) ....

( also advised on BYC ) .... I have given my chickens good quality yoghurt in spring and summer and they love it - they just peck at it and I think they get the idea that it is half eat and half drink !! ... it is very good for so many things. A bit of olive oil on a cotton bud a little way up the vent couldn't hurt, I wouldn't think. Was trimming my girls downy feathers from around the vent, and one moved suddenly and I had to apologise profusely to her, for inadvertently sticking my finger in the vent. She didn't shriek or complain, so I figure if that happened, then a cotton bud couldn't hurt ? .... Vaseline might also be good, but I cannot say for sure - perhaps someone else can advise on the use of vaseline around / just inside the vent ???

Good luck with your girl.

p.s. have just read sjturner79's post - and a finger coated in oil, inserted in the vent can be done. .... so forget the cotton bud ? .... most likely so.

I managed to get the Epsom salts and have given her another long warm bath but there hasn't been any improvement. She loves the baths though, falls right asleep.
I am very sure that it isn't egg binding anymore. Nothing in there that feels like an egg and it's not just one small lump, it's her whole abdomen that is swollen, it's all squishy when you massage her. I have checked the other chickens and this is defiantly not just a fat chicken.
She is also still not happy walking around and is just all round ill.
I have recently wormed all the chickens and none of the poop contains worms so it's not that. She doesn't have any lice and her nostrils are all clear from mucus.
The vent seems to be normal, she is passing waste easily now, it's not blocking up. There is a bit of redness of the skin around the vent and underside.
I have also inserted a finger in her vent until it became a little uncomfortable for her and it's resulted in nothing.
Any other ideas eep?!

Lucas, what were her eggs looking like before ? Did you find any soft shelled eggs ?

If she is now passing full waste properly then is likely to be be little more you can do at home. She really needs to see a good poultry Vet to find out what the swelling actually is.

Cluckcluckluke ....

First, I don't know where 'the foothhills of chickendom" really are, but if somewhere in Victoria, suburban maybe ?, there is an excellent avian veterinarian expert here, they are referred to by many many vets and bird lovers : [email protected] - phone : (03) 9808-9011-- I very recently contacted them myself about worming tablets for chickens. Have now reverted however, to the normal worming mixture in water - the tablets were very expensive. . ( but that's nothing to do with this - just showing that they are helpful by phone ).

Another ( or possibly the same - with altered internet link ) is http://www.melbournebirdvet.com/ and their email is : [email protected] - their phone no. is (03) 9764-9000, according to their website .

Avian vets are indeed hard to come by.

I have absolutely NO idea if this will help - but when my dogs and cats ( yes, I know that they have different metabolisms to chooks ) ... have ever been off colour or ill, they are given rice and chicken, for several days .... helps settle the stomach and intestines, and they recover(ed) beautifully.

SO ... I am wondering if you remove the food you normally give - whatever that is, and try her on boiled ( white ) rice which is bland and has little of nutrional value, plus some good quality yoghurt to introduce pro-biotics, and perhaps some finely ground or grated garlic - but only a little bit of that. .... She needs to have a sense of being full, without the food giving her extra discomfort, by being too rich or too much for her poor innards to cope with at this time.

I would try anything at this stage, frankly. And those foods won't hurt - can only hope they do some good maybe ?

Again - good luck with her - and your endeavours to help your dear chicken.

Avian vets are not easy to come by and I'm not sure what you mean by ' full waste ' ?

The OP seemed to be indicating that she is now producing normal poop. If she is indeed passing both normal digestive and cecal poop easily now the the swelling problem is unlikely to be related to the digestive or reproductive systems.
This leaves a large range of other things that could cause it.
I cant think of another way to determine exactly what is swelling up with the use of force ultrasound or X-ray etc
