Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Well my wyandotte hens have not laid a single egg in Winter - ever! and I am 68 so it must be an age gender thing...

Cant really see what the fellas age has got to do with anything.......

My wyandotte lay through winter and it gets real cold here. Wyandotte are a cold hardy breed that is why they have a rose comb. I think that the reference to age was ' tongue in cheek ' and more of an ' old wives tale ' thing.

I agree that's how I read it too

On another note. All my 6 mth olds look ready to lay and nice and red combs all except my ls pullet and of course. My rooster also 6 mths hadn't crowed yet ? I have a collar on him but it's loose ( not so loose that he will get it caught or hurt himself )

So. Am I lucky I have a quit boy or is it due to no other Roos around - at all ?

Never heard an old wives tale with that sort of content......and I took it as an unwarranted "age" put down, uncheracteristic of this thread.

One of the criteria I applied in selecting the breed was its reputation for tolerating cold weather. From day one they have quit laying early May and will not restart till Spring kicks in. A collegue has suggested adding chilli flakes to their rice feed....not sure about that.

Interesting, as my SLW are one of the only two breeds that have continued to lay over winter, albeit sparsely. The other being the Light Barred Rocks.
Even the araucanas have taken a break this year.

Kooka I think you are reading too much into it. Age is often relevant when it comes to these things, it's hardly a put down. I was always told that hens don't lay over winter too, but I've since found it has more to do with when they hatched and started laying, when they moult, hours of daylight, plus any number of other things, my new isas are laying daily, my younger girls who should have started laying a month or three ago are not.

Never was it meant as a put down Satay has and holds a lot of respect for her elders and I would say similar that my grandpa always told me "how it was in his day" about fishing and farm living and chooks especially pesky roosters always standing on the hens foot ! Lol it's where I learned to love country life. No def not intended as a slur.

Sorry you feel that way though

As I mentioned earlier, just sharing some pictures I took today .. Crystal and KiKi are coming up for 14 weeks old. This is LuLu who wanted her picture taken "Just because I am beautiful" :) I thought this was a nice one of Cilla: This is KiKi showing off how beautiful she is: This is Crystal, I also think she is beautiful :) While not posing pictures, I took the following to show the colouring Crystal and KiKi have. You can see the blue in Crystals wings and she has a blue/silver 'undertone' to her buff feathers. KiKi has the funniest tail with it's black lines and you can also just see them in her neck feathers. More of the blue/silver undertone:
gorgeous pics and chooks!

Perhaps i didn't word it right. The country town i live in the over 60's will not be told by anyone anything new. Even if you can prove them wrong they think you have no clue cause your young and trust me i am not that young. The fellow who i was talking about I actually adore. He is very set in his ways much like the others of his age in this town. Infact anyone who is on my facebook page would have seen the pic i posted from his birthday dinner last night. I don't by any means mean to imply that everyone of that age group is that way just most of my small little town.

Teila, not sure if we are allowed to pick favourites here or not, and your whole flock is absolutely gorgeous, but that little Lulu is just stunning! How beautiful is she!

Does she have a friendly nature to boot?

Oh, how I miss having my chickens...
