Morning Friends :frow

Tee hee at “Stone the Ravens” Fancy, yep, it doesn’t have the same ring to it ;)

Kleonaptra thank you for your thoughts which I do appreciate.  I have done some Crow research back when the murder first invaded and again now due to the couple that remained.

“They wreck up the place” is just one of the reasons I do not want to befriend them; they are already doing that.  If I were to befriend this couple and then their babies and any friends they bring I believe I would just be making a rod for my own back.

I have chickens as my feathered friends and the Crows may just bring ‘nasties’ which they may pass on to the chickens.  We have been here for nearly 6 years and have never seen a Hawk.  The Crows have only been a problem for 2 of those 6 years so I do not think they can be credited with keeping the Hawks away; more likely we are not in an area where Hawks are common.  Also, the gals run is covered and free range is always under supervision due to neighbourhood dogs and cats.   So, as we do not have a Hawk problem, I can see no purpose to having them around and they are noisy, destructive and a threat to any chicks we have.

I do not have lots of land on which we can peacefully coexist and only a small residential block.  If they lived down the back of my ‘property’ I would not be so concerned but being woken by a Crow vocalising right outside your bedroom window at dawn is no fun and having them screech constantly while you are trying to work is frustrating to say the least.  They are also depositing carrion in the fish pond and garden which is not good for either the fish or the chickens if they find it.

I know I have probably already made an enemy of them and I am in their sights.  I couldn’t hurt them but I have no intention of giving into their demands and making friends with them.  If they show even the slightest signs of building a nest in their tree I will be hitting it with the high pressure hose (before eggs).

As any crow deterrents (large paper flapping owl or eagle etc) are probably going to scare the chickens more than the Crows, it looks like I am going to have to continue to chase them off and if it means war, war it is!

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions on a deterrent, I am all ears?

CherryAdventure we have lived here coming up to 6 years and have never seen a snake.

Congrats on the pips ChristieB, looking forward to the bubby pics!

Good job on the outside area for the three week olds sjturner79 and congrats on the broodies … Not sure if I have told my gals yet but nobody is going broody this year! Lol, I wish! :/

Sorry to hear about the lice Sidhe13
As sjturner79 has suggested, the ingredient list of the ornamental bird spray may provide evidence of if it is safe to use on chickens.
When I went through a mite infestation, I used Yates Success and Neem Oil on the coop and Fancy uses no brand (black and gold or Homebrand etc) Surface Spray on her chickens.  I have not tried that but if I remember correctly, it was recommended to her by a breeder and they have been using if for years with no ill effects.  Anyways, I will leave it to Fancy to expand on that if need be.

We have so many noisy things out here. Koalas, black cockatoos, baby galahs and crows. The crows are by far the worst. Steal eggs and the noise is just horrid some days. I haven't found away to get rid of them yet. I do notice that pee wees will chase them from time to time.

Hehe, there are noises and then , there are noises. I'd much prefer the ' ruckus ' of the large flocks of sulphur crested cockatoo to a flock of crows. The 3 am screeching of ' turbo chooks ' (native water hens ) is no fun either.

Good morning Friends

Congrats on the bubs ChristieB. I love that first incubator pic with the little one peeping out at you.

So, I may have scored a small win in the War on Crows.

Yesterday I purchased some coloured paper windmills [$2 each] and put two under the gazebo and one out the front. I also purchased a wind-whirly thing that has big eyes and a ‘tail’ which spins with the wind and managed, using a long pole, to hang that from their favourite branch in the front tree. Also popped a couple of Chinese Lanterns in the tree for good measure and one under the gazebo.

One Crow thought he might tempt his luck at roost time but I used the long pole to convince him to sleep elsewhere. He actually looked a bit shocked that I could reach him

It is a long piece of metal conduit with a circular timber batten attached; light weight, flexible and long enough that I can reach way into the trees.

This morning was the quietest the neighbourhood has been for a long time; I can hear Crows but they are a long way off from here. It is so nice to not be subjected to constant cawing.

I am not kidding myself into thinking that I have won and I am sure that once they get used to the new ‘decorations’ they will be back but that is when I bring out the big guns … Plan B:

http://www.crowaway.com.au/ ... Edited to Add: Do not Order from here!!! .. appears to be a scam. I am trying somewhere in the States and will update on future posts

Everything I read about the CD yesterday was positive and I did not read one comment in the negative. With a 30 Day Money Back guarantee I think it is worth a try if they return.

Edited to Add: I went ahead and ordered the CD; will let you know if it works.

Seriously though we have a few outside here in summer . We had a beautiful red bellied black last year, quite a few green tree snakes, the odd coastal carpet as well. There are browns and tiger snakes and death adders to name a few that live out here too. I have never had a problem with any of them though.

We had a red belly, I nearly stood on him a couple times, but he never attacked, just ran off. Many many greenies. I had a brown. We disposed of him, it's just too risky having him around. Stood on a bub tiger snake a year back.

We have tigers and copperheads. Haven't , ( touch wood ) had any problems with them around the chooks but they are an ' ever present ' danger around the horses , goats and cows. I keep injectable vitamin C on hand at all times in the summer.

Thankfully we don't get heaps of snakes here. They are around but not a huge problem, we always had a long handled shovel by the back door just in case though. Browns are the most common, and red belly blacks come second. As long as they stay out of sight I don't mind them keeping the rodent population down.

I get a lot of pythons. Mostly they try to get my parrots and leave the chickens alone but on a rare occasion a meter+ one will rock up and if I'm not careful (listen out to the chickens panicking) I'll lose a chicken but that hasn't happened in years. Last year I did lose one chick to a python which grabbed it from under its mum, I heard the panic and got the chick back but it must have been internally injured and didn't survive the night. 99% of the time though the snakes don't bother my chooks at all.
