Wow... hatches, babies and adorable cuteness!! Now I want to hatch more babies

I'm glad your mp3 seems to be working @Teila . I'm glad I don't have crows cawing at ungodly hours. We just have plovers who sometimes get upset at something in the middle of the night and go off, but that's not too often.

Sad news coming out of here, Casanova lost his fight. While it's unfortunate, I take comfort in the fact I have some of his babies here, and that a couple look like girls, so they'll get to stay.

Also had a great day at the Wondai Ag show up in the South Burnett, with Yahtzee being awarded his first "class in group" win! What a rush it was for me!



He was very nearly awarded what you call Dog Challenge as well, which mean the best male dog for the breed. We were just pipped to the post by the more mature boy. Never mind though, there's always next week!

So very sorry to hear that you lost Casanova - after all that work for him, and by him. RIP.

Wonderful news about Yahtzee ( fantastic name that too ) .... next year, with maturity and your no doubt wonderful care and grooming of him - he should have the blue ribbon.

I am ( again ) tempted to get the 'envy green' going - with all these beautiful hatches going on ... gorgeous wee souls they are. Well done everyone, who have successfully hatched from several to many little yellow fluff balls. Would sooo love to do same, but it would not be fair, for us but especially for hens and chicks - we don't have the required area and coop set-up.

Ok so Hermione is not well, she was off the roost last night, I put her back on not really thinking much of it, this morning though I've seen she's not walking normally her wings are dropping and she's slow, normally I cant catch her, but I was able to and put her in the quarantine coop.
I called the vet who suggested mareks, but she's going to call her friend who specialises in birds/poultry. I realise if it is mareks Hermione likely will die but I cannot afford to lose all my girls. What can I do?

What do her poops look like ? Coming into spring and given that you have introduced new birds , it could be any number of things. But cocci runs rampant in moist warm conditions. When were they last wormed and with what ?

As for what might be a rooster approaching ??? Anything will do - even Miss Ruby dog. .... SQUAT !!!

Mindy Araucana seems to adore Miss Ruby, and wants to beat down the gate to get out and 'play'. I allowed that this week, with many commands to 'Leave it' and 'Gentle' ... to Miss Ruby - as Mindy has devised a 'game' ... attack and run, which of course would get any red blooded dog going. They were allowed about 10 minutes together, and I was confident enough to leave them together while I climbed in and collected an egg from the coop.

Mindy grizzles when put back in her run - and 'runs' at the cyclone type wire fence, to attract Miss Ruby .... for more game playing. Even when Miss Ruby has sneaked into the run for a moment or three, there is never any problem - she is too busy looking for 'gift ground goodies from Mindy' to be bothered with little chook. They are quite precious together.

Enough already ... I have waffled on for far too long. Below are the two playmates !!!

By the way ... have been fascinated with the ongoing story of the crows and 'crows be gone' CD being used.

We have no crows - they all flock down around the nearby IGA supermarket, picking up whatever they can. I often talk to them, and I think they listen ( for a second or two ) ....

They are highly intelligent birds - and here is a link to what they are able to do ( and figure out !!! ) .... which most likely will not put Teilas' mind at ease, but will show what they are capable of.

My 1st batch of araucanas are hatching. 18 eggs 8 out and 2 more ext pipped!!! So exciting!

On a side note sparrow has finally gone broody so i have a hen to put my polish eggs under!! Yay!

What cute playmates they make. Thor loves to play with things (mind) too. Yesterday morning I let the 4 week old marans out for first time of free ranging. He spent the entire morning following them around like he needed to check they were playing nice which is good if the get scared they run and snuggle into to him. Think he wants to be a mumma

Crow be Gone Update: Morning of Day 6:

So, I chased the Crows out of the trees again at dusk and they moved on. And, while I actually got woken up this morning by squabbling chickens at 05:50am and not cawing Crows, once awake I could hear them in the neighbourhood and then while feeding the gals, the two persistent Crows were in the front and back tree again.

I had started the mp3 before going outside.

The days are definitely quieter and I am not so distracted when working but to be honest, while it appears to have worked on the majority of the Crows, I am a little disappointed in that it does not seem to have worked entirely and as I type this and while the mp3 is playing, I can still hear cawing and can see a Crow in the front tree.

I am going to try some more repositioning and volume changes but I am not hopeful. I believe these remaining few are probably the ones who were under the gazebo at the same time as the player and know the noise is not a threat.

I have hidden the BBQ cleaner that they keep trying to eat and as I type I am watching a Crow walk down my driveway and past my front door!

I am close to giving up. Summer is going to suck, at the moment they are driving me insane with the windows closed, with the windows open in summer they are going to be deafening.

Right now, I hate them!! Good job I do not have a gun, I reckon I could quite cheerfully shoot the evil black &^$#@'s
