Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

41 eggs out of the incubator and into the brooder.
Looking good! Quick question. Is it okay that mt incubator keeps trying to head up round 38? I've had to fiddle with it twice today to lower it back down closer to 37.5. Is it okay if it hits 38 when I'm not around to notice?

Hi everyone! Phew! Took me ages to catch up on everything lol. Aww appps that postage must have been tough, wish u all the best for the survivors!

Welcome @locknest4! Hand raising is very exciting! Ive only ever hand raised once, still yet to have a broody as my flock have only just turned one this month, very hopeful to get a broody though!

On that note, from the comments on other byc threads I have decided to only collect my eggs every 2-3 days for a little while and see if that can encourage one :) I have also read about giving fake eggs for the first week incase they arent good broodies... If i just left them their natural eggs and they decided to jump off after a couple days wed just throw them away wouldnt we? Or eat them? I should read up on how long they take to progress lol. Not sure how i feel about it yet with a lack of info but i do like to do everything in life as naturally as possible.

Which brings me to my next topic. Feeds. Well to add my input i feed my chooks xtra egg and theyve always done well on that (once they were at adult feed age of course). Fantastic news for my wallet is that since their huge new yard hasnt been lived on for about a yr, they havent even been eating it! They are getting all their sustenance from foraging and the food scraps i throw out there (never anything processed) with the occasional seeds. Cant remember who wrote it but I also make sure to scatter my seed mixes as far as possible to make them work for it. So the 7 chooks have been here a week and a half now and theyve prob eaten 4 kilos out of the 5 kilo feeder at the most. Used to have to refill every 2-3 days, now it seems every 2 weeks! Haha.

So jealous and clucky seeing all these gorgeous little chick posts lol.

Might have to change my name to HectorRooster instead! About a week into the move - all were happy as larry - the boys decided to fight it out for the new territory. Hector won! Rodney has been overthrown for the first time ever. Im AMAZED i didnt think it were possible. Then again hector has gotta be about twice the size of Rodney now lol.

So they are somewhat happy with how things are now, no more 'fighting' but still occassional squabbling. Its so strange.. its also a pain on the ears as Hector has taken over the main crower role and his sound so much more strangled than Rodneys perfect smooth tone lol.

Anyway i think ive droned on enough for now, might see if i can get a pic of the size difference of my boys now theyre 12 months old for u all.

Enjoy the beautiful weather!!

Ok so I didnt do a very good job of getting a good size comparison pic. Lol. But Hector being a LS is about twice as wide as Rodney my RIW. It has always worked in Rodneys favour as hes much quicker and more agile. Now Hectors size seems to be taking over more hence him emerging victorious this time.

This is one of the original chicken coops of the property. It is far too small for my flock and the otherone that was already here wasnt secure enough. Im wanting to use this as my broodys pen (if i get one!) But im thinking if that doesnt happen this season ill fix up the other for that use and finally get the frizzle bantams ive always dreamed of to put in here! Its been so long since ive had bantams im looking to u guys for suggestions on how many i could eventually put in here (keeping in mind i like my chooks to have space). I think i would probably fit 3 comfortably but would likely end up extending the run as id feel like they would be too caged..

so exciting finally having my own place that i can do up however I like! :-D

So is lower safer than higher? I can get it so it goes below 37.5 instead but can't seem to get it to stay on 37.5.

Dropping for less than 2 hours at a time to 37.0 eggs won't notice. Longer or lower will make the incubation take longer.
38.1 is max temp for eggs in incubator. Any higher for much over 10 min could start to kill.
That is for a forced air incubator. A still air can be up to 38.5 at top of eggs, if bottom of eggs is 37.5

Thank you! Will keep it tweaked lower then.

This incubating thing is quite hard isn't it. Or is it just my incubator. It took me over a week to find a way to stabilise the humidity, had to put a whole heap of little containers of water in. Now it maintains 50%, using it's channels it would spike then drop. I'd thought the temp was going to be the easy bit sigh
