Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks will give them a close look today. Do you spray the surface spray directly onto their feathers?

Lice lay their eggs near the vent, the northern red fowl mite is miniscule, I check at night with a head lamp and magnifying glass. Some species of mite live out their entire life on the bird , whilst others leave the host just before dawn to hide in the crevices of the coop. Then once the birds come back to roost for the night, they crawl back along the roost and back onto the host to feed for the night.
When I clean the coops I spray the roost from every angle , the walls the floors , everywhere. Best to do this whilst the birds are out in the yard.
Insects build up a resistance to permethrin and pyrethrum products over time, so best to only use when it is necessary . :)
Yes you can spray the birds direct, under the wings , behind the neck and the area around the vent, but not directly on the vent. Be careful not to spray the bird in the eyes or face.

Thanks for the info. I've had a close look under wings, necks and around vents and couldn't see anything except lots of dandruff or dry skin flakes. Which seems to indicate that they are scratching a lot so may very well have miniscule mites that I can't see.
When they go out in their little run today I will put in a tray with clean washed white sand and some DE for them to dust bath in to see if that helps.

DE will not treat mites, they are blood suckers. DE is said to help with lice as they live on the dander.
Though I am a little sceptical about that. B:/

Howdy friends

Ash I can definitely understand the economic factors with the number of chickens and subsequent roosters you have.

Your little ones are so adorable! Big box of cuteness!

devinandfeather those little goslings are soo cute!

RodneyRooster I am pleased for you that you are loving your new home and being able to do what you want etc.

locknest4 I see you have received plenty of helpful advice regarding those pesky mite and lice. I will just add, because I do not think anyone has mentioned it, I used diluted Neem Oil on my roosts and coop walls etc.

Have any of you seen this?

Warning: side effects: Possible overload of cuteness!
