49 out of 56 eggs hatched on 19/9.
Now 49 healthy little chicks have gone into the second stage brooder.

That is really a fanstastic result Ashburnum ....

The mere thought of 49 wee little fluffy darlings all running around ( eventually - out of the 2nd stage brooder - whatever that is ) and having to be protected ... blows my mind.

If I did that hatching bizzo, I would then have to retire from normal life, and sit 24/7 with my little fluffies. To protect them !!

But --- kudos and all good things to people who breed these delights. I think you are all marvelous.

Your pix are great Ashburnum ... they are such vulnerable little sweet-hearts.

Was not able to do a 'quote' link thing on your post, so am replying this way.

I believe what you are doing is great --- mixing your own seeds etc. for a chuck-out scratch mix mixture. At least you know for certain what is in the mix.

And backing off the wheat a bit - but by no means eliminating it --- would well be the go.

I don't know about crushed wheat, but I guess if it is broken down to some degree, it might be more digestible. ??? ... Sorry, I don't really know, but it makes some sense for sure.

ChristieB .... you gave some fascinating insights into the 'old way' of doing things. And you were right - chickens survived so well in the 'old days' .... perhaps because flock owners were more relaxed about nature and what it is, than we are these days ??

Just look at the amount of nasties that abound in humans at this time ... makes me wonder if we have made massive rods for our own backs, by being so super careful about absolutely everything, - - - because we see something that frightens the heck out of us, on a TV programme, on the Internet or by word of mouth ??. .

For those here who remember, look what we did as kids - way back when. My permanent play area was dirt - and mud - and climbing trees !!! A horror concept in todays' world.

Back then, dogs, cats, chickens, horses were all in the peak of health - until they were not. That was the way of farming, and of domestic ownership. There was a far more relaxed atmosphere around our animals / birds - which probably did them the world of good.

Do we all worry to much ? ( gawd - I know I do - - - - these days !!! )

Am absolutely sure all these eggs, pipping chicks and hatched chicks are super protected at all times.

Still think you are all marvellous to do it ..... the decisions to be made - broody hen ? ... how long will she remain broody ? ... incubator and which type. Is it working properly ??? etc. etc.

Being of the '' older '' variety of BYC poster, maybe I am past all that.

Practically automatic ? - makes me have a few thoughts - with much work for hubby to do to accommodate them. Have a friend who has a good incubator which I could borrow - but am definitely still in the pre-pre-pre mulling stages of thought about it all.

So today I moved the hen and the eggs that were left I was going to throw them away but I saw a crack in the egg so I cracked it open to find a baby chick in it that was still alive 4 days later my nan and grandad thought it would die but i didn't so I put it under a heat fan to dry it off and now it is the strongest in the group so one died this morning due to getting stood on I think but the one I saved this morning is alive and has taken over that ones place so 11 still rest of eggs must have given up halfway

So pretty congratz

From my Christmas hatch of Belgians I have a frizzle. So cute. While it is not standard for a belgie to be frizzled it is still adorable. I have quails hatching this morning 5 out so far and a few marans and Belgians from my own girls then this long on going hatch will be over. Then it will be time for a clean and restock.

Hi All, love all the chick photos that people are posting. Congrats on your hatches!
I have a quick question. The new perch I have constructed for the coop is made out of treated pine. Upon reading some posts on BYC regards treated pine I am now worried that it won't be good for the girls to perch on. :cd Am in a bit of a flap about it. When my husband asked me why I used treated pine, my answer was I was just in auto mode cause that's the wood I use for outside projects. I really didn't think about it
It took me two days and a few choice words to make, so am reluctant to chuck it and do it again. I painted it yesterday with a mix of surface spray, small amounts of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. Left it a few hours then painted it with linseed oil. It all has soaked right in and wood still looks dry.
So should I go ahead and use it or should I paint it over with some paint?
Any thoughts or advice are most welcome.
