Well, I do not have any news but I am posting because I just noticed that I am coming up for my 3,000th post and wanted it to be in here

RodneyRooster mentioning “no wonder I couldn’t remember which was frizzle” prompted me to share something.

When I had just the four gals, doing a quick head count was by name .. Cilla√, Dusty√, Blondie√, LuLu√. Now with 6, checking off by name or counting is too long, especially when 3 are similar colours etc .. head count now is 2 x blacks√, 2 x blondes√, 2 x frizzles√ Done!

Congrats on the successful transition to the coop locknest4.

Love the pics Kleonaptra .. spring is definitely in the air!

Actually, I just remembered I do have some news … the Crows are back!

And, I lost my first egg to one yesterday … not happy Jan!

When Cilla and Blondie lay an egg, if they linger in the nest box, the eggs dries and sticks to their ample butt feathers. I quite frequently find an egg in the coop or in the run where one of them has jumped out of the nest box, complete with egg and it has dropped off at some stage. Last weekend I had to bail up Blondie in the garden as she was still carrying her egg around with her

Anyways, because they started demanding to be let out at 3pm [I do not finish until 4] and hubby could not put up with the noise any longer, he let them out at 03:40 and did not see Cilla’s egg in the run … when I came out at 4pm a Crow had gone into the run, somehow managed to drag the egg onto the lawn and had cracked it open and was eating it!

This means war!!!

Teila, I want to know what the crows are doing up so early???? They were going off this morning when it was still dark.

Maybe they were celebrating me getting the FOX. At least one of them. I heard at least another running off. The BCC has been great. We tried to get them Tuesady night but missed it as it got in and took another of my sons pets and maimed my Barnevelder Lacey.

Last night it was back but we got it credit to the council.

Now I have a question to all - Lacey can't walk. She has puncture wounds on her neck around her head but no other visible injury - no broken bones that I can feel. I'm not sure what a dislocation would feel like but I don't feel anything different. At first I thought she may still be in shock but today although she can stand which is an improvement she still can't walk. The poor thing somehow clambered into the nest yesterday and laid an egg. She is eating everything insight and can get around to food by scrambling somehow.

Any ideas? Do you think it is a spinal injury and she will only suffer?

Cheers

Sorry to hear that haven :-(. No experience with injuries I'm afraid, I'm an if in doubt take to the vet person but then our vet has chickens too so she tends to discount their treatment. I would at least give it a few days in case it's just soft tissue damage.

Just make sure you still get how they got in blocked up. You can be pretty sure the other one or another down the track will be back.

Thanks @Teila and @locknest4

:-( @MyHaven im so sorry, i dont know anything about injuries either but id probably agree with apps. Perhaps keep an eye on her for the next day or 2 and if no improvement or deterioration take her to the vet. If she deteriorates, no i wouldnt let her suffer. But hey if shes still feeling up to egg making hopefully thats a positive!

Goodluck xx

Oh no. I have no idea on the injury. I hope she recovers. Maybe fancy can help you out when she is on @Fancychooklady

Foxes like most carnivores carry all kinds of bacteria in their mouth, you need to disinfect the wound and start her on a course of antibiotics. Salmonella poisoning has very similar symptoms .

There is also some debate as to whether or not foxes carry toxoplasmosis .
