MELBOURNE CUP DAY - what's your plans for today? What's your tip for the race! I'm off to the local racetrack to stand in the rain, oh joy lol. Hopefully I win something to make it worthwhile, mind you as I only ever bet $5 it will need to good odds to make up for standing wet all day!
Hey appps I hope you have a good day! Me? Working! In the spirit of Melbourne Cup Lunches:
Ha, ha- better not show my hubby this comic! My 14 yr old just looked at it over my shoulder and said "Huh, I don't get it"

Not doing any Melbourne cup lunches today - going to weight watchers instead. Will probably be a quiet meeting with everyone else 'lunching'. anniebee I think you're right about the Americanisation of our terminology. I remember willy - will Y's causing damage. Now they seem to call them mini tornadoes.
Good morning Friends :frow Can’t say I have experienced or remember any tornados but I had a very close call with a freak storm/mini instant cyclone while living on a yacht and sailing up the West Australian coast. To this day, the eerie calm beforehand is probably the most unnerving thing I have experienced. A few years back there was something similar to a tornado in Deniliquin; took our friends’ large trampoline from their back yard, over the house and deposited it in the front yard .. scary stuff! If it is quiet at work and not much happening in here, I lurk in the ‘unanswered’ view for a few reasons. While I am not always of much help, replying with something bumps the post back up the queue where it hopefully catches the attention of someone more experienced. As you have experienced, I can be a bit wordy and prefer to answer questions with as much detail as possible and find that by the time I finish wording my reply in New Posts, 6 other people have already covered most of the points I had ;) So, if the post has not been answered for a couple of hours or days, less chance of word wastage and most importantly, the OP does not feel ignored. So, the Divas did not wake me up as early this morning and were not so patiently awaiting breakfast in the front run so the invisible monster appears to have moved on. Sadly he did not take KiKi’s invisible eggs with him and she is pancaked on the empty nest until I am positive everyone has finished laying and can block off the nest boxes.
Teila I like your Idea of bumping people's unanswered questions back up the list :) I look at the new/recent posts sometimes to welcome new members as I remember how nice it was to get a few welcomes myself when I was new.

Good morning Friends :frow

Was not looking forward to today .. Mondays are our busiest day and usually we have 2 people from 8am to 9:30 and then 3 or more for the rest of the day.  Just found out it is just me until 9:30 and from 9:30 to 11:30 there is just me and one back up who, while very knowledgeable, is not good at getting things done quickly … gunna be a long day!

No storms here .. beautiful day yesterday.  I hope everyone else was lucky also.

sjturner79 congrats on the new additions .. I did chuckle at “wasn’t intending to buy”  ;)  They are pretty cute!

Sam that little one is adorable!

Satay ah well, at least you have a spare “I told you so” for another day ;)

We have a bit of a mystery … KiKi, who was pretty close to being broken, was in the run just before bed time last night when she thought she saw something in there with her .. she clucked up a storm which, of course, got everyone else who was in the garden going as well.  Took quite a while to settle them down and even at bed time, on the roost, KiKi was still grumbling about something.  I pretty much stripped everything down I could in the coop and run and found nothing and no signs.  Come dark, they settled.

This morning I was up before 5am to frantic chickens .. KiKi and Crystal had not come down off the roost and the others, while down, would not go into the front part of the run, even when I put breakfast in there.

I stripped everything down yet again and once again, found nothing!  I didn’t move or change anything yesterday, there are no signs of any wildlife, including snakes and rodents and I have no idea what is going through their crazy little chicken heads … well, probably just KiKi’s crazy little chicken head + the power of suggestion ;)

I say KiKi was close to being broken because I had her locked out of the nest box for the majority of the weekend and she was pretty good by yesterday but this morning, when she eventually came down off the roost, she spotted the nest box.

I have also discovered that I can not put KiKi in the broody breaker .. I tried it yesterday and she freaked out; to the point that both hubby and I thought she was going to hurt herself.  She kept throwing herself at the wire and worked herself up so much she was seriously panting.  I had to get her out of there before she overheated!  I was in the shed getting a bath ready for her to cool her down and when I came out she was just a pile of feathers .. OMG! I thought she had died ... heart attack, heat stroke etc.  Anyways, turns out she had just hunkered down into the dirt and was cooling/calming herself down.

I very rarely question my decision to have chickens but today is one of those days .. up before 5am, psychotic overheated broody's, invisible threats ..........

Mine do this too. I figure, if its a snake, I'll never see it. However, I fixed the gate on the pen and a couple of weeks ago they did the mass freakout..alarm quacks and clucks and i came a-running...to find a massive blue tongue crawling around puzzled by the new gate. It makes sense now why sometimes eggs are missing, sometimes everyone freaks out, and why I never find the culprit. She just sneaks in every now and then.

Tee hee locknest4, I am pleased that your 14 year old did not get it

Kleonaptra I did forget to add an update to my invisible monster story this morning … in that, there was quite a large cane toad leisurely doing laps of the fish pond last night, mixing up a bit of frog kick and back stroke with some obviously relaxing floating and as KiKi freaked out just before bed time, I am thinking she may just have spotted a cane toad who, with all the noise she and everyone else was making, decided to scoot!

Hahahaha 'not buying' pfft yeah right. U cant browse at a poultry auction! Awesome chooks tho and great bargains! Same chooks i want :)

I never even knew it had a name at all the overbred/overtred thing haha. Yeah i wouldnt think it would need seperating unless it was getting badly picked on for it.

I've tried and hopefully haven't missed any posts. Love the baby photos. And sorry to read of losses. Had my hands full lately

The shearer turned up, Yes hubby is still gloating that I told you he would. I booked the man via text so not sure how the thinks he knew he would turn up :smack. He is from a farming property out west and is studying at uni down here. From what I can work out he is that busy with requests for a shear that he ran out of time last weekend. He didn't look much older than 20 but i'll give him this he could shear a sheep well. Under 30 mins all 3 were done. So calm with the sheep too and handled my big ram Tyson well.
Above pic is bel looking suitably unimpressed with her shear

and below Patsy after.

Great that hes so good with them :) still should have called to let u know.. :-/

Well we had school transition this morning! :-D he loved it. They have chooks there and I emailed them afterwards letting them know they have scaly leg. Severe case of it but they did have it when i went there a fortnight ago. They obviously have no idea. So that could be an educational experience for the kids tho :) poor things are so badly affected..

My 2 week olds are so big now! Forgot how fast they grow! Still have no idea where these 2 grey ones came from though.. be interesting to see how what they look like when theyre a bit older..

A glass of wine with friends. The closest I come to the races is owning 6 off the track. Jack just had a massage , chewed my hand the whole time.
I'm backing the jockey. Damien Oliver number 13 . Did see trip to Paris at werribee, very nice horse, will make someone a nice hack one day.
Satay, I told my daughter to back big orange , being as she has a thing for chestnuts . :)

I still say cyclone, some americanising is ok but I agree it's getting to be that we are losing some of our uniqueness, I too mostly come here, I occasionally comment on other posts but this is the only one I regularly check, I'm following bens thread ofcourse :)
I'm not sure what's going on with the app so I've logged onto the web version to post some pics, difficult to get good photos of them but if I could get some opinion on this colouring
All of them (I think one ducked down as I took the picture)

Cute chicks.
Cyclones and tornadoes are two different types of storm cells. With Australia being so sparsely populated most tornadoes do little or no damage as they usually occur inland.
