I got a good chuckle from Michelle’s speech and agree that it is a wonderful story.

However, this morning I came across a very disturbing video on Facebook posted by a friend. I will not share because it is quite graphic and involves the killing of horses but basically while the successful racers are treated like Kings, the not so successful ones in the video are sent off to the knackers destroyed in a way that can only be described as disgusting animal cruelty.

I know nothing about keeping horses, racing horses etc but would this be the norm? From what I understand and reading Fancy’s posts, ex race horses are given the opportunity to go out to new homes?

Surely those stables that treat their horses like Kings and spend so much time, money and love on them would not be sending the unwanted ones off to such demise?

I understand, like chickens, there is a need to cull but in such circumstances and such beautiful horses?

It could be. Main thing to check for at that age is blood. If you don't see any blood and they are not showing signs of illness you should be fine.

Well they are quite bouncy as usual but it does have a bit of an orange look to it. Not blood red though.

@Anniebee I think everyone uses the site differently, I do a bit of everything, if I want to know the answer to something specific I search for it or ask here or start a new thread in the appropriate forum, if I just want to read then I go to the forums section and pick a topic, the big threads that aren't area specific are in "pictures and stories of my chickens" I've read quite a few just for funsies some of which took me days, sometimes I subscribe to keep up with new stuff like I have with bens or if it's a really busy one like ozexpats "getting the flock out of here" where I don't want constant notifications then I just look it up and read the new pages, always interesting and educational but that's not the point of reading it, it's more for the story and pleasure of reading. I also follow vehves hot composting thread, this is the only one I interact with regularly though, not so much danger of being misunderstood with fellow Aussies

Unfortunately these kind of people do exist in the industry. I doubt that people like you and I could go to any abattoir in the country and not come away with nightmares after looking into the eyes of the poor creatures in the pens. The coalition against racing posts many clips and some are from overseas where horse is on the menu .
We are offered horses all the time and our feed bill keeps us poor. If just half of the ' keyboard warriors ' that have much to say , but absolutely no knowledge, put their money where their mouth is and sponsored an ottt , more would be given the chance of a new purpose in life. There are several rescue organizations screaming for donations of hay and feed. Each year we donate hay to THRO, and the more feed they have , the more horses they can take on. Every little bit helps. :)

So on the subject of identifying chicks. I have this little one which was the survivor of miss Blackie's less than stellar sitting skills. The woman I bought the eggs off said that she has 41 chooks with a mix of breeds but out of the options I've narrowed it down to two possibilities. Either coronation sussex or splash Australorp. She also has blue and black australorps and double laced barnevelder. Anyone care to guess what I have? and this I just wanted to share because its insanely huge! The two eggs in the pic are from the same chook. One was yesterday and the massive one is todays. Loving all the pics and stories. I don't get on the computer much and typing on my phone is appalling sometimes but I am starting to follow the stories and it gives me something great to read when im stuck on the couch feeding bub.
Double yolker i guess? :-D yep gotta have a good read for feeding time
Yes the same person. I will put a link up to his thread in a bit. I have replied a few times to things on bens thread so it now comes up under my profile or where I have posted on the mobile version and I just click it Link below https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ws-and-pics-of-our-journey/4080#post_16047391

I agreed with (AB?) That many horses in one race in my opinion is where the trouble starts. I do not personally know about how all that goes teila but so many old hacks are ex race horses. My one horse i have owned was an ex race horse (not melbourne cup degree tho!) And after 6 months of having him he passed away from a heart murmur from too many drugs :-( Horse treatment ranges ridiculously depending on the owners/trainers. So nice to hear of the good end with fancy :) yes ud think spending as much time and money as u do on a cup horse and them still being some of the best that theyd keep them and race in smaller races.. As I said I dont know personally about horses the adoption rate im sure would be far greater than greyhounds but that does happen with the dogs all the timw. Theyre not often rehomed so are left with only one option :-( tis very sad. Well somehow clumsy me managed to twist my ankle in the 1 out of 2000 ditches i didnt see on my jog last night! So as i twisted it and i come down on my other foot i must have shifted some gravel which scared the crop out of my dog and he took off. Weighs almost as much as i do so i hit the ground and he dragged me through the gravel on impact. So big graze with some hard swelling on my left leg (hurts like hell), took a huge chunk of skin off my finger tips and twisted my right foot.. dont think ill be playing netball tomorrow :-( dunno how i managed to make such a big deal out of some uneven ground.. lol

Hey Fancy, thank you.

While I am not naïve enough to believe that some people, business and industries are not disgustingly cruel to animals; it would be horrific if it was the norm.

I did wonder if there was not some sensationalism involved, especially with the Melbourne Cup just having been run.

I found it hard to believe that stables who love their horses and owners/trainers etc who I have seen break down and cry at the track when their horse is injured could let the horses be treated in such a way. Also, I believe the blame should be on the knackery and their methods.

Great idea that they should be sponsoring.

Ouch RodneyRooster! Hope you heal quickly.

My neighbour looked like he had dressed up for Halloween on the weekend .. he had a bandaged elbow a bandaged knee on one leg and a bandaged calf on the other leg. Apparently he came off his push bike on Thursday, cracked a rib and took off quite a bit of bark .. went out for a ride on Friday and an over friendly dog who wanted to say hello was chasing him with owner running along behind. My neighbour stopped so the dog could say hello and give the owner chance to catch up .. said dog was sooo happy, he enthusiastically tried to climb all over him, taking a heap of bark off his calf

Omg. That reminds me of a neighbour out here a few months back. She went for a walk to the dam down the back of their property with her dog as she does every day, well on this Sunday she managed to fall in a hole the chickens had been using to dust bath. She couldn't move and her hubby swore he heard a crack so they rang the ambulance. 45mins later they arrived. We have no ambulance station in esk so it had to come from another town. Off to Ipswich they take her and after xrays she had broken her leg just below and just above the knee... She's all recovered now and I hope you will be soon too. Mary also said to never do that in an open paddock as she was sure the darn ants were going to cart her away while she waited for the ambulance to arrive.
