Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Aaaaw tandykins Lothos is absolutely adorable! Just popped in to share some pics taken of Blondzilla this afternoon ... One Very Angry Chicken!
Having quite a few pekins myself i know what they are like when broody. My black hen is sitting on eggs at the moment. I have a total of 17 broodies at the moment most pekins or Australorps

Oh my .. this morning is one of those rare mornings I mildly regret having chickens.

I was woken at 04:45am by Blondie and Cilla obviously auditioning in the lead roles of a B Grade Horror movie .. Blondzilla Meets GodCilla!

I spent an hour organising another broody breaker for GodCilla and now have them in separate broody cells.

Dusty is whinging because “how come they get to be outside and I don’t” plus “I wanna lay an egg but I am too busy whinging” .. KiKi probably has no idea why Dusty is whinging but seen as Dusty is whinging “I might as well join in”. Crystal has just laid an egg and is telling the whole neighbourhood about it; it is only 06:30am and I am just waiting for someone to knock on the front door.

So, out of 6 chickens, the only 1 not giving me grief is LuLu who is wandering around in her own little Frizzle bubble, as per usual

Tee hee tandykins as sjturner79 mentioned, my gals do have two names; one for when they are not broody and one for when they are.

They need two names because they have two totally different chickenalities. Blondzilla [aka Blondie] is the sweetest gal when not broody, you can pick her up, give her cuddles, she natters away to you, follows you around but when broody, as you can see from the pictures, she is BAD! I forgot to put my gloves on yesterday to pick her up and she drew blood. She will chase you across the garden and seriously attempt to remove toes. I do not and have not had a rooster but I think she could probably best be described as similar to an aggressive rooster. The picture with the wings is her reaction to Hubby approaching her with a meal worm!

GodCilla is not as bad when broody and is actually still OK with people but makes her flock mates life h*ll which is why she is now in broody jail. Besides Cilla, the only other member of the flock not to have a bruised comb is Dusty and that is only because Cilla can’t reach it!

sjturner79 I made a decision to have a break from hatching for a while for a few reasons. In short, no room to separate a broody, especially if anyone else decides to go broody and as I have reached critical chicken mass, I cannot keep any and it seems unfair to hatch babies that may end up in someone’s pot.

satay 17!! I think I would need a nice cosy cell of my own!

I have to go into the office today for meetings … for once I am excited about it … YES … no fighting, no squabbling, no whinging .. well, unless the meetings do not go well

Omg poor girls broodiness sometimes makes them loose their minds. I am glad i am not in the city with the amount of broodies i have right now. Thankfully most are far enough away from the house that i can't hear them til i go down to let them out for the day. It was fun cleaning nest boxes yesterday with the amount of broodies i have . I take them out of the boxes one by one as i had to totally change the bedding and they sit on the floor like someone has glued them there while going off at me in their high pitched broody voices. Well all except one of the aussies that i had to lock out of the main house as she kept jumping right back in every time i took her out. My funniest broody right now is my blue marans. She is the only marans i have had go broody she is so used to me removing her now that when she sees me enter their pens she jumps up running flat out around the pen going off as to say the crazy eggs stealer is coming the crazy eggs slealer is coming :lau

I slip into a nice peaceful and calm sense of normality during winter but have been abruptly reminded of the joys of Spring/Summer also :th While not confirmed, Cilla may be broody again and for those keeping track .. 11 eggs; 4.2 weeks! She was picking on everyone last night and has been in the nest box all morning; I am giving her the benefit of the doubt but I am not thinking she is laying an egg :he I never thought when getting chickens that I would actually need more broody breakers than nest boxes and at this rate, that might just be the case. Plan B is to just take the nest boxes out of the coop and put them in the broody breaker with the non broodies who are shortly to be outnumbered :lau
11! Better than most expected :lau Why on earth would u ever give her the benefit of the doubt... *shakes head*
The chicks are 25 days old today. I'm starting to be able to pick out the boys from the girls. My Ancona roo seems to be the father of most if not all of them - unsurprising as he's head roo and tends to discourage the others mating. Most of the babies are black or black and white - but little Lothos looks just like his Lavender Araucana mumma and I love him so. He's so beautiful. I have literally no idea if he is really a he. I'm still very beginner-class at identifying anything without a single comb but those legs... Opinions? Isn't he beautiful? I just want to cuddle him.
Cute! I am also a novice at sexing which is why is probably a good thing that even though there are a handful of my chicks im SURE are cocks im not getting rid of them until there is absolutely no mistaking because my first instinct then was that was a hen.. As i said i am a novice also and hopefully im horribly incorrect with mine cos there are a lot of cocks appearing lol

Wow, amazing pics! She looks so crazy and huge but so beautiful at the same time. Not seen anything like her lol. My almost 3 yr old that was just waking up next to me obviously saw the pictures and said 'biiiig chicken. Thats big chicken mummy' lol

Glad it's not just me. :) At some point I will get photos of all of the babies but first I have to pry them out of Queenie's cold, dead, and rather bitchy talons.

At first when we opened up the maternity brooder to let them out each day she led them back in each night. Now she's taken to convincing them to roost in a tight corner of the garage. Tonight I may grab them all after dark, take them in the house (ha-ha, you can't see me to peck my eyes out), get my photos, and then put them all in the big coop. Everyone seems to be getting on just fine - I think it's time for the little babies to learn to roost with the big kids. They're impressive little fliers already.

Haha i wouldnt even try snatching the chicks from my 2nd broody at night so goodluck!

Im still contemplating whether or not to grab the ones im 'sure' are cocks and seperating them now while its easier but they have such fun together i feel like a meanie. Especially if they do turn out to be pullets..

They sure do jump/fly a lot at this age haha mine just love climbing up in/on the bushes but they are just starting to get a slight bit heavy for some of their more loved branches haha.

Since they rarely spend any time in their range (always out the back yard or side now) im also contemplating whether to set them up with a feeder out here so that i know theyre getting enough of the nutrients designed for their growth instead of foraging being their main source but im worried that will entice them to roost out here if they have no reason to head back to the shed..

Raising chicks can be such a mental challenge lol

Hi guys I have 4 pied Guinea fowl keets that are getting given to me and I was wondering wether you could hatch then under chooks because I have a Plymouth Rock that's gone clucky and not sitting on eggs and I will put them under her

Secondly I was wondering how much they are worth

Oh god yes. People ask me what I do all day being a stay at home mum. I tell them that my chickens require a lot more attention most days than my 5 year old. It's crazy. At least he can open the refrigerator and get himself an apple.

I have one Isa Brown who is cranky at me for having moved our nesting boxes into the garage and I keep hearing her in the coop, making a fuss as she repeatedly tries to fly into the wall where they were. The now completely flat and smooth wall. Optimus is not the brightest chicken - though in my experience, Isa Browns seldom are.

Meanwhile, Mr The Conductor has spent most of the last 3 days standing at the new location of the nesting boxes policing who is using them. He barely moves away, chastising lower-pecking-order hens who try to get in before hens higher on the pecking order. He's such a bro like that. I don't need the hens to get it - I need him to get it, and he gets it. <3

All Telia's bantams have 2 names. Thier normal names and thier broody names.
Mine don't change anything like hers do.
This pleases me. :3

Mine don't all change. Though Queenie becomes Queen ***** - I've come to appreciate that she's NOT THAT BAD. My current broody Tetra has turned into Tetrociraptor. She turns into a broody ball of rage, stomping around during her morning constitutional and threatening to mess up anything in her way.

Queenie is starting to let the chicks several meters away from her. I look forward to her laying again and returning to her slightly less offensive self. -_-
