No, I won't, I'm just "like that" when it comes to my pets, and my chickens are pet chickens, not farm chickens, so they get the full indulgent pet-owner treatment.

(It's stupid, they get treated like queens, and then I'll eat chicken and chips from the shops. Just the luck of the draw where a chicken comes from, I suppose, life of luxury or horrible time in a cage .)

Thanks guys, it was the boys that alerted me, but once I got to her even wetting her down couldn't prevent her little heart failing. It was 38 here yesterday and either I'm just no longer accustomed to the heat or the heat here in tassie really is different . Our visitors from Brisbane assured me that 30 felt much hotter here.
Yesterday morning we were down at the beach watching a local swim when along came 2 tourists with puffy jackets on. What's going on with that ?

So sorry to hear :-(. My in laws say the same about us on the coast compared to them in Canberra. I think we feel hotter because we get more humidity. I remember being stuck in a broken down car in 45 deg heat in Perth and being very surprised it didn't feel that hot. They are very dry heat compared to us too.

Yes we do tend to spoil our feathered friends. We had a photo shoot here this morning with two very shy little girls from the city. They were a little overwhelmed by the foals brashness and he constantly rubbed up against them for a scratch. But they were very happy when little BB ( blue butt ) , a coronation cockerel chick jumped up on the bench beside them and went to sleep. He is spoiled rotten.

Just a personal observation on the chickens and heat discussion .. here, it is the Frizzles that seem to not cope as well with the heat.  While they all hold their wings out and beak open on extremely hot days, it is the Frizzles that start first and the ones I am most concerned about as they seem to be suffering more than the others.

I agree. My frizzles are first then my Aussies then the pekins. Odd the belgians really don't care too much about the heat

I wouldn't dwell on it, I've only lost 2 birds to heat . . The country of origin would have originally factored in , but the breeders tend to strive for certain traits and in doing so sometimes lose perspective on what's good for the breed. The same can be said for most species.

I agree, I have only ever lost a few to heat and it was almost 50 c that day and about 85% humidity. They tend to adjust well to whats's normal for their area. Our temps can get up to just under 50c in summer and well below zero over night in winter. Doesn't really seem to faze any of them too much.

The interesting thing last year when we hat a bunch of different breed, all the astralorps died of heatstroke and none of the others. It's weird because they had the biggest combs and wattles.

There are other contributing factors such as feed, and it is not recommended that acv be added to the water in extreme heat. Not saying that you have either factors going on , just saying you need to look at the ' big picture ' .

We had an awful day here yesterday, nice 18 today but we haven't seen any of that rain that keeps threatening. I lost my poor little blue bearded Silkie hen to heat stress .
Fingers crossed that they get the spirit of Tasmania up and running, DD is booked to travel next weekend.
I do hope that they don't have any livestock on board at present.

Began raining in the Dandenong Ranges this morning at 3 a.m. and hasn't stopped since. Good drenching rain for the most part, with a few halts here and there.
Hence my girls have been 'caged' for the day. Doesn't hurt them once every so often, as they eat more, probably drink more, and rest up.

Yesterday it was my little rose comb Mindy Araucana who suffered in the heat ( 40°C up here / 42.5° C in Melbourne CBD ). She was panting badly, I always add ice blocks to their water, but she wasn't having any of that. Also hosed the tree above them several times, to keep them cooler. Finally gave them all a goodly amount of water melon. They all ate the lot, and Mindy stopped panting so very hard after taking in that sweet water. She improved a lot after that.

Fancy - The photographs are beautiful, and doesn't Castiel look the goods in that lovely monochrome you posted. They grow so quickly.

Spirit of Tasmania no. II is due to sail for Devonport at 9 pm on Friday night. Meantime they are trying to pack everyone into S of T no. 1 ... ? to do the back and forth trips. Hope your daughter and horses you may be sending, are not impacted too much by all this.
