A serious but sounds like a weird question. Do dorkings have five claws / toes ?? Even went out to check my girls. :/ They have three at the front and one smaller at the back. Only ask as you mention ' normal with five ' ? Do hope yr chicken is better. And no longer stressed. Cats tend to roll on their sides when bandage / weight, even a little is applied. Always thought it had something to do with balance. But cats and chooks are a tad different !!

As for possums, they eat anything that is not covered. Must get me another large plastic grey owl. They do help.

MyHaven, I hope you do get the opportunity to adopt a Silkie, they're adorable, and a bantam pen sounds like a wonderful idea Sorry you've had a fox problem, I haven't so far, but wandering dogs or cats are a concern of mine. Lot's of people just don't keep their animals indoors at night around here unfortunately.

I did love my sons Silkie. She was a gift for his second birthday and would sit on his lap. It makes me sad to think what happened to her. They are so inoffensive and defensless.

I can't believe I could get a fox in my backyard. The council are coming to trap again next week. This is just a precaution none have been back that I know. Last time they trapped, the first night we caught a possum (it's a kind trap) and the fox must have walked passed it to get in for the second attack on my chooks. Then we caught a domestic dog and finally a fox. It turns out your yard is really busy at night.

Yes, some people do not take the care of their animals they should and don't consider their neighbours.

I recently did a hatch in an attemp to get get a speckled Sussex. The two chicks (out of 3 eggs) were so different to each other in size, feathering, legs and amount of white, that I thought one must be a girl and one a boy. Then last week all of a sudden they looked the same - you know where this is going....

So when I assessed them both as roosters I thought I had to fill a spot in the flock. There was no one here to talk me down....

Meet my new girl. Yet to be named.

Before anyone says it - Yes I know she's not a speckled Sussex.

Yep, just 5 weeks and 17 eggs after the last bout with broodiness, KiKi is once again broody

And here I was hoping that was it for this year .. stoopid summer! lol

I only have the one D'uccle at the moment, Beatrice (or just Bea). She wasn't sold to me as any particular colour, and as some patterns don't emerge until the bird gets older, I don't know if this is her final colouring or not. Is there a chance she could be a mille fleur? Or if not should I use that as an excuse to adopt one? She's just turned three months old. If she is just a black and gold variety, that's fine with me (it's actually really good camouflage for her, as the grass currently varies from shades of pea green to a dead crunchy brown). She's little, but very big on personality. Watching her run is hilarious, those feathers are like oversized clown shoes. This little Willie Wagtail that's been hanging around lately makes her look huge though! And here's a pic of little Agnes, now she's officially become a hen. She was hard at work this arvo ( I thought it was too late in the day to lay an egg, apparently not). Only taken one rdo so far.

She looks like she is a quail Belgian but for her true colours to show usually takes a year or more. Bitty was a pure lavender so i thought til just over a year old then she moulted and she is a lavender mottle. She didn't get her colour til her 1 year old moult.

I think the heat of this summer has really thrown some of the broodies. I feel like some of mine have been broody for ever. Apparently its supposed to be cooler this week. I will believe that when i see it.
