Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Could the d'uccle owners (aka the enablers LOL) look at my imaginary chooks and tell me how much bigger Flora will get?  I forgot to ask to look at an adult at the chook farm, and I really have little idea of their eventual size in real life.  She's really tiny, she's like the size of a corella, not a chook.  Also, with her patterning, will she stay how she is, or will she get more "spots" when she's grown up?

Also, does anybody know what colour Jeannie the pekin in the back is?  I posted in the Pekin thread but haven't had any responses.  I've looked online, but the colours seem to be one colour, whereas she's got 2 colours - head/neck and then the rest of her.  Her colours aren't shown very well, her head has lovely golden colour all through and her feet are yellow.  (her feathers are so SOFT, is that a pekin thing?  are they all lovely and soft? She's like touching cashmere)

EDIT  poor carl, can she be given anything to "bind her up"  or do you just have to wait for her system to sort itself out?

(I've got my new bunny houses set up now, I'd like to see your new bunny house/aviary as well if you want to post)

That looks about the right size for a Belgian girl. They don't get very big. She will keep changing til just over 18 months i find. My grey mottled Belgian had no mottling til just after 12 months.

Good to know fancy. Cause he probably will a inside roo.

He looks lovely Kat. I hope you find a away that he can stay.

Poor Carl, excessive thirst is one of the early symptoms of impaction, perhaps it's time for a check up with the vet. I'd try her on a little buttermilk , it may help put a lining on her tummy. Yukult would probably be better, as it will help with the gut and provide her with her probiotics.

and you can make home made butter milk if you don't have any one cup of standard milk mix with 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

Ok so I definitely have a problem.... i've been on gumtree again I want this And this appps I hope Carl improves and that hawk finds other digs.
So go get them girl :lau Love black mottle and lavender. Remember you will still need quail and porcelain as well as blue millie fleur , silver millie fleur etc. ;)

Goooood morning folks

Crystal and KiKi thank you for the birthday wishes .. actually, if you listen closely you can probably hear KiKi thanking you herself .. OMG is she loud this morning!

Hey kat79 sadly I agree that your little Silkie is looking like a boy. I would definitely see how he goes though, especially as you mention he is going to spend time inside. You could keep him blacked out until later in the morning.

When my two Silkie babies turned out to be boys and both started crowing I rehomed them pronto and then apologised to the neighbours for the 04:30AM alarm calls…they had not heard them

Also, depending on what type of crow he has, you may be able to convince the untrained eye that he is, in fact, a hen … with the sounds that come out of our coop sometimes the neighbours probably think we have roosters

Fizzybelle and appps how lovely to have some project company .. may be the chance of some cooler weather has us all wanting to do things

appps I have everything crossed that you are once again able to get Carl though this

Gees, having another Hawk around sucks!

MyHaven sorry to hear you did not get those two Pigeons

, they definitely were cuties!

Fizzybelle I have found that the deep little method in the run definitely keeps fly numbers down.

In my first effort to reduce flies, I tried fermented feed as FF was reported to do that. I gave it a good 6 month trial. There may have been a slight reduction in numbers but that also may have just been wishful thinking on my part that the plan worked. While there may have been beneficial affects, not enough for me to continue with FF .. the girls ate it but were not as keen as they are for their dry feed.

The deep litter method has definitely reduced the fly numbers. I think it was in here that I read that someone did not like the idea of the chickens being “surrounded by their own poop” but I do not find that to be the case.

As the girls are constantly scratching, they are turning the litter over, drying out the poops quickly. I also give it a good turn with the garden fork every afternoon. I never see a significant amount of poop and this summer, definitely did not have many flies.

OMG MyHaven, yes, go forth and collect your new babies as soon as you can. So gorgeous!

And yes, they are totally pigeons, one of those fancy pigeon breeds you hear about. That's what I'm telling the new neighbours, should they find reason to complain (they may, due to the noisy egg songs they've been belting out lately). That means I only have five chickens, one under the limit ;)

D'uccles, those bearded little munchkins have won me over to their side. I'll never ever be able to walk past one without bringing it home. I still want a mille fleur and a porcelain.

On another note, our new house has a big brick pond in the front yard, which I suggested to my mother would make the perfect duck pond, even has little fish in it for them. She was less than keen unfortunately. I need to get the poultry bug to spread.

Isn't it funny how such a little bird can have such an impact. As I type i can hear biddy telling me off outside cause she wants out. :lau

Might be joining the building craze too but it's going to be a combined avairy and bunny house for us. Our little pigeons dad has decided it's time he got his own place lol

And here is poor Carl this morning
400

As you can see, everything seems to still be going straight through her. And she has already drunk 500ml of water so far today.

oh sweet Carl. I hope she is better soon.
