Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Teila Charlie-bear was beautiful so sad.

Myhaven potato chip is very cheeky as she lives in perth too I think she was being very helpful. LOL

The hardest part is the D'uccles look beautiful, maybe I will have to be strong and say no. I don't even know if he will like my silkies or australorps. If I ask hubby to build another coop he may blow a fuse.

Well it's been an early one for me, yesterday whilst cleaning out the slw pen I found red fowl mites.

Fancy Sorry to hear about your early morning, I hope the birds have forgiven you. I've only ever seen a few fleas I use diatemacious earth (not sure of spelling) does that help with mites. I was told that the d earth is good for everything. I use it in hope that I don't get any nasties.

Congratulations! Is it dark brown?
No, just normal brown and teeny weeny

There you go again! Cheeky.
Who, me?

potato chip congratulations on the new layer.

The nest box is also not going to be ‘external’ .. while I have an external nest box at the moment, I really can not see the difference between lifting a lid to get eggs or opening a door on the side of the coop. As long as it is accessible from the outside of the run, I am happy.
Thank you. I agree about the nest box, Mine are just in the house with a flap door. The only thing with an external box would be that the lid would be lighter, and as it'd open up against the side of the house, you wouldn't have to clip it open, the way I do (of course, if you did a normal opening door, you wouldn't need to, I only need to because it opens upwards)

What does it look like when you've got mites? I thought they were miniscule, and you could only see them at night with a torch.

Charlie bear was beautiful.

I have to stick up for the owner at the show. I wouldn't allow strangers to feed my chickens at a show. Not everyone is nice, Remember that iceskating girl? You'd never think that somebody could let competitiveness get to injury, but some people are like that... seriously weird.

Hey Apps. Fingers crossed for Carl. Poor girl. She is pushing the bounds.

Thanks Anni. My Sam dog has always been good with my girls and can let them free range the yard while I'm not home because Sam stalks behind. I think it's waiting for them to lay ( devil loves his eggs ) and half protection ( again I think it's because they lay the eggs he loves!) but he. Chased off a few snakes and massive blure tongues and a few cats and a possum so far and he hates with a passion the minors and other birds we get but he is content with the rosellas magpies and peewees roaming around the gardens.

I'm not a believer of the whole DE thing. But if you are using it be mindful of the possible harm to you and your birds if inhaled.
The mites are minuscule but they generally leave the bird before sun up and congregate in the crevices of the coop during the day, only to return to their host once they have settled in to roost for the night. I almost missed them, had the lid to one of the nest boxes in my hand and when I turned it over , there they were, hundreds of the little specs all clumped together. I had one crawl up my arm and whilst I could feel it , I had a job seeing it.
Another treatment tomorrow and the coops have all been doused with Yates 'success ' .
I didn't get a pic, but this link shows just what I found.

So after drenching the coops , up before light to spray the birds. Can't say anyone was very impressed with their early morning shower.

Wanted to share a little story about ' show ' people. I have found dog and horse people to be a little , let's say ' precious ' about their animals, but chicken people are a breed to themselves. Over the weekend we had our local small farms expo. As we were walking around with a local beer and some food cooked by none other than ' the gourmet farmer ' , I saved our lovely organic grown scraps for the chooks I could see up ahead in a cage. When my lovely Hungarian friend offered them to the ' experts ' for their birds as a treat, he was told unceremoniously to put them in the bin. Pffff
I got a coat of paint on the new coop yesterday and will finish up today, pics later.
