Does anyone have trouble typing on this site? I am not fast by any means but I'm typing way faster than what the site is coping with.

The lady I got my australorp eggs from says her girls don't like the heat but they haven't died and it got into the 40's quite a bit here over this summer.
She puts ice bottles out and ice in the water when shes home. I have a misting system in my coop if it's too hot I put that on and the girls stand under it.
Not sure what I'll do next summer with silkies I hope it was a good idea to get them. Having said that the lady I got them from has hers outside and she didn't have any problems.

I'm sure I'll find something to worry about. LOL

My little girls are ok going to bed everyone just seems to wonder in when it starts getting dark. I only have a problem when its not dark enough and they think they should be allowed to stay out till its later and I want to go out.

Ok this afternoon I let the girls free range and tonight I only had to call them back into their run!!!

SO happy!!!! These three chicks are AWESOME!! Such well behaved little ladies.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on mites. I think I am going to leave it as there really isn't any real reason to think the chick have them other then I had a small bug on me. I used an entire can of surface spray on the coop before putting them into and so I think it was just a coincidence but will keep you all posted. x

They had no clue that they were supposed to go in the coop after the sun went down so I had catch them one by one (much to their disgust) and put them in there. The next night I thought I would have to do it again. So off I went... trying to catch them... I gave up after about 30 mins with sweat running down my face into my eyes from the heat! I went inside and sat for a while. I thought that I had better try again only to look out the kitchen window and see that they were no longer in the run. They had done it! Put themselves to bed.... it was such a relief

I got new girls and I couldn't see where they were. They were perched on top of one of the feeders in the open run and it was raining. (the coop run is roofed...) I had to carry them and put them inside, which meant coming out of the open run and around into the coop run because there is only a chook-sized door from the coop run to the open run. The only thing more fun that carrying chickens about in the dark is doing it in the rain LOL

There are actually 10 different comb types in chickens, from a combination of 4 gene pairs.
In general the bigger the comb, and the further it sits up from the head, the more heat tolerant and less cold tolerant the chicken. That makes the pea comb which is indeed standard for Aracuana one of the less heat tolerant, with 2 types being less so, the true walnut comb(not the silkie version) and the suppressed comb( which is basically a chicken without a visible comb) .

Having said that people in our area lost a bunch of large comb astralorps to heat in the last big heatwave here, but had Aracuana and some walnut comb xbreed do quite well.

I can't wait to see the cup comb that my buttercups should grow. I got the breeders backyard quality, but I still think I got a couple of nice cups. Time will tell.

I had originally though that until I realized that silkies comb is not walnut comb, then started research. There are silkie comb, v comb, buttercup comb, twist comb, strawberry comb, in addition to the basic types of single, rose, pea and walnut. There are a few others that I can't think of at minute . There may actually be 16 or more types thinking of it, just not all have been named and defined.

Do you know what they call the langshan comb?

May i borrow your girls to give my belgians some lessons

Mine (at least the Millies) have been running out of the pen between my feet in the morning for green pick the little rotters. Not good when I am doing 6 pens before I head to work. They come back most times when I tell them - little flapper feet and all.

You are so right about how lovely they are. I got 3 eggs in 4 days and I am sure it is still only one pullet laying. I thought they didn't lay very well.

There's a lot of talk about egg songs... what are they? I haven't heard of them before this chat. Is it a specific name given to the kinda half-crowing a chook does after laying an egg... or is this just a nickname for something?
