Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hot and stuffy air rises up not through floor so maybe it needs cross ventilation to keep the air fresh.
Gaps in the top between roof support

Paul put a window in the top above the perches. The boards are not snug either so the air can flow. You can see the fence at the back as its corrugated the air can flow through there too.
When we built it we thought that would be enough. Hopefully with the window too. We should be fine.

My 8 week old aussie started to crow today. I didn't think they started for a long time. I let all the chooks free range today and Lucky (15wks) pecked at the little roo and it stood its ground and flew up at her with his neck feathers all out. Very impressive.

Thanks everyone for the advice if you see anything else let me know.

How bout one of these ?

So cruel.

Absolutely beautiful birds / wonderful photographs. Would love one ( or 3 or 5 ) .... might be able to consider it one day.

So many gorgeous breeds to choose from. Chicken math would go out the window ( maths always did for me !! ) ....

Now I am curious, no one has mentioned the site going down yesterday. Was it just me. I tried on three different devices and got error messages.

Didn't trouble me yesterday, but sure is acting up this evening ( Friday ) .... has frozen on me 3 times - just opt out and back in again and all seems ok until a yellow warning ribbon appears at the top "Shockwave Flash cannot load", then I hit reload etc.

Often think broadband connection is as much a problem as other tech. glitches. And the type of browser being used ( Google Chrome which I use on my PC, has issues with Shockwave on some sites ).

Will quit typing while I am ahead !!

I'm using explorer for the last 2 days and I haven't had any problems.

The new coop

Used a dog ramp for them to get in.

nesting box they have never had dividers so we didn't put any in.

The girls seem to like it. We have hung the feeder underneath.

But we have a problem. I just went out to check on them 1 is sitting in the doorway another on the ramp the rest are on the ground. I am wondering if it's to dark in there the light comes from the door and the floor is 25mm mesh under the perch the rest is wood. I gave them some bread and they went in but came straight out. So I'm wondering if they need more light when the go to bed. I'm thinking because its not that dark outside they're not going in and when they do it's too dark. Is that a valid theory?
Can anyone shed any more light (haha) on it?

I believe more light when they go to bed would defeat the purpose of their rest time. They seem to like dark places to roost or sleep. Letting my dog out at 2 a.m. to pee, with only a small flashlight in the back garden, the two big girls get up immediately ( " yaaay - morning is here " ) and begin to eat. Torch turned off, they return to bed, in pitch black.

Am wondering if the one girl in the doorway was flexing her chook hierarchy muscles, and saying "this is all mine - buzz off you lot " .... on the other hand, the coop is new, and they have to be given a little time to get used to it, find their preferred places for roosting or sitting to sleep - and all will be well.

Besides, different chooks go to bed at different times. Mindy is very early to retire - always the first to her little roost. The other two ??? whenever will do them. Sometimes at dusk, often when I tell them "Bed" whatever time of day it is ( daytime storms / heavy rain has me herding them into their coops ) .... and if I am a little later, in more dark than light they are already in bed, in darkness. Think that the proximity of food & water ( even though they don't usually eat in darkness ) .... is also a comfort for them. Try bringing a food container into their sleeping quarters before dusk, or have it remain there constantly. Doesn't hurt to have several food containers in appropriate spots.

And adequate ventilation .... they need good air, but not draughty spots.

Cheers .........

Rest in Peace KiKi 16/03/2015 - 22/04/2016

I woke up at 06:30AM and mentioned to Hubby that the girls were very quiet and on looking out the window, not out of the coop yet, which is not normal.

Hubby went out, came back, gave me a hug and said that KiKi was gone

I have no idea what happened, not a mark on her, she was running around the garden yesterday afternoon, causing mayhem, eating mealworms, harassing LuLu.

She did try and sleep in the nest box last night and I popped her on the roost but other than that, nothing out of the ordinary,

She slept next to Cilla on the roost and there are a few Cilla feathers in the coop. I heard a cat fight at 3am but obviously not in the coop.

I feel so bad right now after talking about rehoming her and venting about her being noisy, she is gone

That is such terrible news Teila ... and my thoughts are very much with you.

Through you, Kiki became very dear to us all. The worst thing with birds - they often simply 'go' for no apparent reason, even at such
a young age.

So very sad. RIP dear little Kiki.

Big
