I woke up at 06:30AM and mentioned to Hubby that the girls were very quiet and on looking out the window, not out of the coop yet, which is not normal.

Hubby went out, came back, gave me a hug and said that KiKi was gone 

I have no idea what happened, not a mark on her, she was running around the garden yesterday afternoon, causing mayhem, eating mealworms, harassing LuLu. 

She did try and sleep in the nest box last night and I popped her on the roost but other than that, nothing out of the ordinary,

She slept next to Cilla on the roost and there are a few Cilla feathers in the coop.  I heard a cat fight at 3am but obviously not in the coop.

I feel so bad right now after talking about rehoming her and venting about her being noisy, she is gone

Good morning folks

After the emotional blur that was yesterday, I have some serious thread backtracking to do as I missed some posts between my last one and the posting of the sad news .. so, forgive me if this one turns out to be a novella. Hopefully some ovations here and there will keep my chatter to a minimum [came back to the top to add that I do not think I have given as many ovations in total in my entire time on BYC than I just have in 20 minutes or so .. First up, once again, thank you all so much for your kind words and support. I have no idea what I would do without you guys who understand that none of our feathered friends are ‘just a chicken’ and it is OK to grieve when we lose one.

As you do when you lose a chicken to causes unknown .. was it contagious etc? I had a sleepless night and sent hubby out to the coop first thing this morning because I was too much of a sook to check .. everyone appears fine and healthy.

Not that they are in here .. but to those people who do think “they are just chickens” you could not be more wrong .. some human families could learn a thing or two from a chicken flock and yes, they have their own version of emotions and know when one of their flock is gone.

Turns out my last post was the Minutes of the Meeting which do not seem as funny now as when I posted them but anyways …..

Fancy that little bucket diving Wynadotte is a cutie! I loved the picture of them on the mat, at the back door.

Fantastic job on the coop! You have received some great advice and tips but if I can, I just want to echo that it does usually take them a little time to adjust to new surroundings and if you believe you have enough ventilation, I would not stress too much unless they continue to not want to go in there.

Some of my flock have been together for three years and they still squabble about sleeping spots every night when they go to bed.

Anniebee never thought I would say this, but the whole dog eating chicken poop post was interesting reading, thank you.

MyHaven yep, I noticed the site was down for a couple of hours and it is a known, intermittent issue which the site owner/management have their techs working on.

appps I was just thinking that we had not seen you for a while and was hoping that all was OK. How is Carl doing?

So, today we are off to the Gold Coast as North Melbourne are back in Queensland, taking on the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon and of course, we will be there to cheer them on.

I am glad it is a long weekend as the day will pretty much be non productive in that we leave around 1pm and probably will not get back until 9 or 10pm but it is worth it and I will still have two more days to catch up on chores.

The plan before we go is to let the girls out for a morning free range and spend some quality hug time with them.

Now we have the new, roomy coop and everyone is used to it, I will be able to watch the match not worrying [too much] if everyone got to bed OK and whether they all managed to get a spot on the roost etc. Hopefully I will just be able to come home, check on them and wish them a belated good night.

Edited to add: When I did backtrack to the Minutes of the Meeting I remembered the whole ‘dried cricket’ trial … They are the only thing ‘different’ that we have done of late and I can not help but wonder if they may have had something to do with KiKi’s demise? I doubt it very much and I know it is silly but I kinda feel like I do not want to give them any more. Any thoughts and input would be appreciated.

Teila chickens , like us can suffer from any number of ailments. Short of doing an autopsy you will never know for sure. I had a sudden death a couple of weeks ago . My prize silver laced Wyandotte roo was healthy in the evening and dead next morning. I looked him over with a fine tooth comb, found nothing, but then I found red mites in his coop. . So while I can never be certain , I will put it down to mites. Hens can of course have issue regarding laying and your little Kiki may well have had an underlying problem that resulted in her noisy behavior. What ever the cause, she lived like a queen and you served her well.

You are nuts! Fancy thinking you're the only one ha ha. I taught my little one to count doing that when he was two or so.

I only have 5 and yep, I do head counts on multiple occasions throughout the day and twice at bed time .... You can tick the 'neurotic' box next to mine name also
