Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

It's actualy not hormones as such, they add antibiotics to many feeds . They do it in the poultry, pork, beef and lamb industry, by maintaining small but constant levels it controls disease and promotes better yields ( larger animals ). The FDA in the US has of this year , banned the use of them , only hope we follow. The antibiotics that we use in sickness are becoming less and less effective because we are continually consuming them in our food chain. I've had to resort to organic chick starter here , because recently they removed the amprolium and replaced it with an antibiotic . So for many people they will be starting their chicks on antibiotics from day 1. :(

I rehomed 3 cockerels this week :), so the girls are celebrating with ' smashed pumpkin ' . Half an hour in the oven , axe in center , they love it. Kent and butternut are only 90 c kg . Should have seen the young guy at woolies face when he said ' pumpkin soup ?' and I replied ' no, the chickens are having a treat '
After counting the six pumpkins on the counter he said ' wow, how many chickens do you have ' ? I said ' if I told you that , I'd have to kill you . :lau

Thanks, I did query if he meant antibiotics but he said "no hormones". Went on to talk about not only the bigger bird but the effects on sexual maturity.

I also tried another produce and asked what growers they had. They only had the same brand. I asked if they had another because I'd heard it had hormones in it. He responded strangely. Said "yeah I heard the same" and walked off to serve someone else.

Antibiotics? - that stuff they say is not added to anything.

They make it so hard to know what you are either eating or what you a feeding your animals.

You can't rely on the staff at your local pet produce to know much about anything. Most of them haven't got any poultry and will sell you anything.
If I'm not sure I take a pic of the ingredient panel and go home to research before I jump in.
Many brands are less than forth coming with information but I find that Laucke from SA have the best ingredients list. :)

yes the local one. 29th and 30th july. Tully qld. Bit excited. Thinking about doing townsville also

Figured as much. I used to know NQ pretty well through work travel and a cousin in Tully.

Why not give Townsville a try. Go for it.

It is exciting. Bet you can't wait to rub shoulders with all the show crowd. :)

Agreed about the source of the advice. I had one kid tell me about what he did with his chickens. Then when I was talking to him another time he told me he didn't have any.

The first fellow though that I spoke to about the feed said he had worked for the manufacturer.

Hi everyone.

Just wondering i have a red sex link who i suspect is egg bound ..... now she has laid one egg but still seems a little sick. Should I be expecting more or should she improve?

potato chip I was going to give you an ovation but apparently, for the first time in 3 years, my ovations are ‘over the limit for rating content. Please try again later’

I only have 5 and yep, I do head counts on multiple occasions throughout the day and twice at bed time .... You can tick the 'neurotic' box next to mine name also

Teila --- Have quite a few times been prevented from giving more than ' X ' number of ovations. Normal practice apparently for this site. Is a bit annoying though.

..........

And I am in there with all the 'neurotics' .... only have my 3 girls, and one roosts beautifully - ( easily seen !! ) .... but I doubly make sure my other two are in the coop before locking them up at night. ( Molly RIR has a habit of wanting to scrounge around in the darkening run, and runs out !! ) .... so I always say " Two chooks - goodnight girls " after checking that they are happy and settled, and can then close the coop door with assurance that all is ok for the night.

I lock it up with what my hubby calls 'bells and whistles' ... which is a slide bolt, a brick at the bottom of the door, a weird looking piece of timber jammed at the top left of the door ( both to prevent rats from getting in, if there are any - haven't seen a one for ages ), and car roof elastic over the small tarp that covers part of the wired coop door - to prevent wind lifting it off and flapping it around in an overnight storm ??? Nuffin' wrong wif me !!

( little wonder some peeps think we are somewhat off the planet !! )

.... but they don't know the attachment and attraction of chookies ... do they ?

That's my contribution to weird 'lock-ups' for chickens. !!

........ Cheers .......
