Do you use game bird not medicated starter. We (or at least no one I know) can get not medicated up here (Qld) anymore. I have found a game starter for quail that is not medicated.

I use a non medicated organic crumble for the first 3-4 weeks , gradually introducing them to the laucke game bird finisher mixed with a free range grain 50/50.

Yeah ditch the mixer , this way there are no dirty dishes and it keeps them occupied for longer.

I don't cut up anything I give the chooks. They just pick little pieces off everything. It's surprising how much they can get through and what they can demolish. They are like little eating machines.

As for bugs, I remember one day Marcy found a cockroach and Grace was chasing her around really enthusiastically trying to get it. Usually Marcy does what Marcy wants, but Grace was motivated to try to get that "yummy" (yerrghh) bug off her. It was a "prize" (again, yerrrghh).

I had some nice bits of tree branch that I got the loppers to leave when I had my big tree pruned last time. I was going to make a parrot stand or perch, but they've just been lying about. I've put them in the open run. The little little girls stand up on them. They look so cute. It makes the open run look a bit less like a prison yard as well.

Fancychooklady, I have a small bag of calcuim carbonate, it's all powdery like bicarb, will chickens really just help themselves to it? If so I'll try leaving it out rather than mixing a little into their food. Make things easier. Some could do with more calcium, others more protein at the moment, but they sneak each others food, makes it hard sometimes to keep track.

This afternoon all that is left is skin. I cut half way through in quarters then pop it in the oven for 20-30 min whole. When you drop it on the ground it cracks open.
Crazy cat only liked the butternut.
Laucke is a bit more expensive but because it is a micro pellet there is no wastage. I find that the barastoc is too big for them and they leave it to the ducks or it gets wet and turns to slop. I pay $30 for 20kg, but on average most feeds that come into tassie are about $5-6 more expensive than on the mainland. We stock up on hygain products for the horses when we are in Victoria.

Told you that cat is crazy.

For my layers I feed Red Hen 17 dry. But finding the Jenco 17% with larger grain pieces is fermenting better in my FF experiment. I am finding up to $5 difference in a 20kg bag between produces.

We always do the dawn service , after 30 years in the navy hubby wouldn't have it any other way. But today we did both services as our daughter was invited to sing the national anthem and tear or two were shed when she sang amazing grace at the cenotaph .

It's been great reading all the info on feeding our feathered friends. Thanks everyone I got so much out of it. All the info helps me make a more informed choice on what to feed my chooks.

I was thinking about how we say clucky chook here not broody. When we grew up my grandparents had chooks and so did we and it was always the chook pen. That seemed to encompass the coop and run. I still just call it a chook pen. Just wondered what others called there chook palaces.

My husband was in the army and my dad was in the navy for quite a number of years. As I'm sure most of us had and still have family in many of the wars in the past and now. It's good to have a day to remember the past, to thank those serving now and to pray that our children never have to live through a war here.
