Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Okay, I take it back. Let Penny out of the broody run today and one of the Australorps pecked her and chased her squeaking all the way back to the house where she's been spending her days. So seems they are now giving her a hard time after all.

this is their first climbing of the chicken heir achy ladder as penny was bottom till they came along so hope it's short lived then they settle down again!

Hello, I'm in Victoria about 20 minutes out of Ballarat. Has anyone had any experience with chooks that have deteriorating coordination or lack of balance? I have a barnevelder rooster and hen in quarantine with this problem. They have runny bottoms and it's sticking to their feathers. They are on death row and I'm giving them one last chance with this germicide I purchased today. Please any advice would be fantastic. I only purchased them 1 month ago.

The only 2 things I know of with those symptoms are a spinal cord fault( unlikely for 2 birds) or mareks disease which unfortunately can not be cured, is easily spread and will live in the soil for over 2 years after the removal of the birds

Funny thing is it's her own darn fault lol. She was supposed to be their happy little foster mum but she just freaked out and tried to kill them when I snuck them under her. If she had just accepted them they would be like last years Australorp she hatched who just lets mum be.

Oh dear poor chooks. With the lack of coordination it could be a B group vitamin deficiency as for the runny bottoms if it's green it usually a sign of starvation , but it could also be that they have an infestation of worms. I would try them on some Gatorade or electrolytes a bit of Greek yoghurt and if you can stabilize them worm them. Here's a poop chart.

Thanks for the information. putting them down without any research wouldn't be right. However the risk of them having Marek's means I've got to try different remedies quickly.

If you are using the avitrol , (which is not approved for use in poultry ) it covers everything so as a ' rotational ' dose you could just use piperazine which only covers round worm and doesn't seem to put mine off the water. I use the levamisole because it covers most worms . But as I said in a previous post , if you haven't wormed them before best to dose them with the piparazine first , then 10 days later use the avitrol. By doing this you won't kill all of the species at once , avoiding the possibility of clogging the birds system.

Thanks, I'll get some piperazine to add to my chookie first aid kit :)
