Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I do something similar. I do noodles rather than pasta, sometimes rice as well. I use sardines but will look in to mackerel as well now that you mention it. I grate fresh turmeric over the top as i grow it myself and usually add a heap of chillis.

I find that the pasta is less fuss and the most cost effective. The salmon roll is sold at our local tucker box for dogs , it has soft bones in like canned salmon and they love it. At $4 a roll it is even cheaper than the mackerel and a nice change . When I can get the 10kg bags of rice for half price I alternate the pasta for rice. :)

Hi , I joined yesterday and started my chook adventure about 2 years ago. We live on the northern end of the Gold Coast, Queensland. I have 2 white Silkies and 2 hybrids that all share the coop that I built. We are on 1 acre and they free range. We have 2 cats that at first thought that the chics would make a good meal but now that they're fully grown the hens are boss and the cats are scared. We also get wallaby visitors but everybody seems to get along OK. We were getting eggs regularly but just found a stash of 29 eggs in the garden ferns that would account for the recent drop off in production. They were all eggs from the hybrids and we calculated about 2 weeks worth of eggs if both hens had been laying there. Built some new layer boxes a few days ago that seem to be working. I will post photo's as soon as I can.

The big supermarket eggs come from production reds, a strain of Isa Brown, but they need a fully controlled diet with 20 hours light per day to do it.

That is so gross. 20 hours of light per day ? .... no wonder they have short lives, and have ruptures internally from thin shell eggs.

If I let Miss Ruby out to pee, turn on the outside light, the big girls get up ( not Mindy though ) ... "oh goodie - it's morning and feed time " .... they retire again when the light goes out.

I gather these reds / isas, are caged birds ( which is revolting ) .... or even some of the free range Isas' the producers 'claim' to allow. Lights on all that time is still cruel - keeps them going madly to produce eggs.

...........

Does anyone have any recommendations for an automatic door opener, that will lift a coop door on a timer.

I had one but it's just been recalled by the factory :/
