Hi all, how's everyone?

For me, well, Annabelle has fowl pox. Of the few mozzies left this time of year, she gets bitten by one with the pox, poor girl, though it's in very, very early stages. Of my six, my four banties are immunized against it, just my large two, Ada and Annabelle aren't. It looks like dry fowl pox, small black lesions so far on her face and comb. Would it be a good idea to give Annabelle a preventative antibiotic as well in case of wet pox, or just monitor her (and Ada who no doubt will soon get it) for a while? I've put sani-chick on her spots for now, and she's in normal spirits.

Oh poor thing. Dry pox is the lesser of 2 evils, that being said the antibiotics may help if it develops into wet pox. The virus will run its course either way , but it's often the secondary infection that can become fatal. Keep the food up to her, the 2 x that we had to euthanise were literally starving to death.

Twice I've had just one in my flock get it and it never Passed on to any others. It's alway been a chook that was a bit under the weather to start with too so maybe do a bit of a check of overall condition in case it's a sign that something else isn't right.

They replied today with a request for more info etc. I suspect though it may be where I have the solar panel as I've just got nowhere gets more than an hour or two sun each day. That said however, it's been turned off for 3 days and even with that hour or so a day still won't open the door so not sure what to think.

I'm going to get an extension wire for the panel and put it right over in the sun, when the rain stops anyway, has set in for the week.

That would probably help. It is likely that it needs 6-8 hours sunshine per day to charge enough to run the door. I have never owned one, because I would need 10x the solar panels supplied for it to work were I live.

He has 7 standard size hens ( Faverolles, Welsummers, Sussex and a Barnvelder) and the 3 bantams! He is only interested in the standards so far. They see through the little "come here" dance he does for them. Poor fella...the more effort he puts in the greater the disdain! I'm not sure if he could make chicks with a standard?? On the odd times he mounts before getting in trouble, he ends up sitting on the poor hens neck!!

I've had a few of my bantam boys successfully fertitlize standard RIRs and Asltralorps.

Coram love the pic of the Faverolles & Belgians; also your OEG bantam roo and the tales of his dramas at wooing the ladies  I had a chuckle at your Sparrowhawk V Peacock tale also .. not only is your Peacock a beautiful bird, it sounds like he has a matching personality.

Fancy I found an exhausted Turtle Dove in the run with the girls yesterday, he appears to have exhausted himself in his efforts to get out.  Like chickens, they figure out how to get in and then instantly forget so they can not get out again 

Anyways, I knew they could get in via a smallish gap just above the human door and this has now been fixed so no more visitors.

Mixed emotions at the moment in that I am pleased I caught the rat which we think was living in next doors’ carport in the boxes under the tarp but also sad that it had to be that way 

Looks like we are in for a rainy day .. up to 20mm predicted and it is overcast and raining at the moment.  It is good to see the girls scratching around in their covered run and happy they are not getting wet.  Sadly, as is always the case here in Brisbane, after rain comes the wind and tomorrow is predicted to be Windy on the BOM; looks like it will be a day in the coop for the Princesses tomorrow.

Woah...sounds like some crazy wind coming your way. We only managed to get to 8 degrees today with rain. Loving it though. We had 2 months with no rain over summer, then we had a huge fire and our stables burnt down. It was FULL ON. Stable rebuild is about to start! I think it's great you caught that rat!

Oh gawd. I've never seen it. So it comes from mosquitos?? Another thing to keep an eye out for...

Noooooo!!!! Not keen on OEG Faverolles, Sussex or Barnvelder crosses!! Wonder what would come from a Gold Duckwing OEG and black Belgian...hmmmmm

Thankyou Fancy and Appps. It seems like dry pox for now, no respiratory signs so far (thankfully), so I'll keep her sores clean, and clean everyones food and water bowls daily till it runs it's course. Annabelle's appetite is pretty normal, eating everything in sight and chasing me into the laundry for more goodies that might just magically appear. I've also been giving them soluble vitamins in their water which I will continue for added nutrition to help her through, and additional veges. I'll certainly keep an eye on her behaviour though, and should anything change I'll take her to the vet to be looked over. For now, I hope it goes quick and that she's the only one.

Might order some mealworms, ensure her spirits stay boosted

Actually, I think I'd like to try farming them, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Yeah, best you can do is get vaccinated birds (or get them vaccinated before any fowl pox outbreak) and tip out any water where mozzies might breed to help prevent it.I got my Annabelle and her bff Ada early on in my chicken keeping from a produce store, so I don't know what if any diseases they're vaccinated against. Once they've caught it I've read they're less likely to get it again, if they do it should be less severe. I think I'll look into ways to repel mozzies better, plants and scents ect. They were kinda bad when we moved to this new place back in March. I'll keep you posted on Annabelle's progress though. My poor girl had a rough summer, heat stroke and a strep infection, I was hoping winter would be easier on her. This summer at least should be better, lots more cool, thick shady trees all over the yard (not just the sides) and jungle to hide in, with a new super coop, which is coming along. Roofs done, and doors are nearly finished. Working on nest boxes next. It's taking time, other things have come up, but is getting there, slowly.

Oh and I have another egg layer, that's five out of six now, my pekin Esme is laying fantastic eggs, very nice size and lays quite regularly too
