Nothing creates more chaos at my house than seeing me walk out into the yard with a calico sack. They all know what's inside ;)

That is very interesting information, however I am pretty certain little "Silvery " here is definitely a boy. His full name is Captain Long John Silver (thanks kids lol).

I am going to try and keep him if it can, I have already caught him making a very strangled kind of crow.

It will depend on the neighbours I think!

Hope the neighbours are nice about it all. Depends I guess on just how vocal he does get. !!

Love the long name the kids gave him.

Cheers ,,,,,,,,,,

Usually the neighbors can be bought over with fresh eggs. Worth a try.

Thanks Fizzybelle at least I can now not give up hope totally of them arriving. Still no response to my e.mail. Yeah, it would be nice to have been told .. not my idea of customer service either

I need help identifying this little guy/girl please? I can not find it anywhere on Google. It is definitely a meat eater and that is all it seems to steal from the girls treat bowl .. not interested in the seed at all. It is cheeky and quite brave; definitely not timid.

It has been hanging around here quite a bit but I have never heard it call out so can not give a description of its call.

Also thought it was a butcher bird, and figured it might be a juvenile with those dull colours - except for the fact that s/he is kind of small, and it is only late winter now ?

Wonder when s/he was hatched ? Magpies, to which butcher birds are related, breed in late winter, and their full flight young, are ( still ) shrieking for food early to mid summer.

Maybe this one is last years hatch ? Takes a good year from hatching, for their ( magpies ) adult feathers to come in. Most likely the same for butcher birds. ?

Cheers ....

Hello! I'm from central Victoria and have just started out with our flock of 6 Hylines. Managed to pick one up today, she didn't seem to like it much but baby steps for all of us! So far we've had an egg each day which was a surprise having only got them on sunday.

Sjturner79, that's a good idea, turn it around to benefit you, but for me it's just a bad habit Annabelle's taught herself. Eventually there will be another fence so she won't be able to get near the door. Eventually.

El-in-Oz, welcome!

Sounds like you're making good progress so far if your able to pick one of them up, shows some level of trust on their part. Treats are always helpful for getting into a chickens good books

, plus spending a lot of time with them. Depending on personality some birds are friendlier than others though. I have some that adored being picked up, and others that tolerate it because it's me. Mine like peas, corn, cauliflower, tomato (they go nuts for tomato), breads ok now and then, but mealworms by far are the best, most foolproof treat!

Yes it was an annoyance at the last house. We had to let the cats in and out manually as 4 of our chooks got better at getting though any High or design of cat flap than the cats .
