Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

They look to be good quality chooks. You shouldn't have any trouble selling some.
If you are trimming the wings, I recommend only doing one wing as that will unbalance them and make flying difficult.\
If you do both wings they learn to compensate.

While I admit to trimming both wings on my chookies - and must do a wing clip now on Mindy Araucana who flew beautifully over the wire fence yesterday 3.5 feet at least high .... I tend to agree with your idea of one wing only, and the unbalance they then have in flying.

Have to ask though, mightn't that unbalance them when they are walking ? or just flapping their wings as they so often do ? I am guessing not, but had to ask.

Cheers ........

Nice, they look like they should be fine for you. Bit small if you were planning on letting broodies hatch.

Quite a good size, got them for the coronation Sussex in hope that it discourages them from going broody. The Wyandotte have 14 nest boxes in a row but I am going to try 1 x in their coop too. I had been looking at buying some from the states but the postage was going to be a killer. Nice that our local poultry shop got some in.

It really only makes them over balance if they attempt to fly or jump. I've tried 1 x wing then both wings on naughty ' franny ' the Wyandotte . I still find her on the verandah every morning. It's best not to clip wings on birds that are likely to be shown as its not accepted in the ring. :)

She IS better - in several ways.

1) She is now using one or both of her feet / claws to scratch at the earth to uncover goodies, occasionally.
2) She continues to walk faster - when she walks !!
3) She is still eating and drinking well.
4) Both her legs are now the same size .. it would appear that any infection has gone.

However, she still carries her tail pointing downwards ( but it is NOT the penguin sit ) ... which precedes eventually, a sit-down. And upon sitting, her tail continues to return immediately to an upright position ?? ( which to me indicates 'happy' ) From there .... she pecks at the ground to eat dirt and grit, or sits to eat finely chopped green vegies from the ground, or find tiny insects.

She comes out of her coop all gung-ho in the a.m. --- fires off her enormous amount of loose-ish woopsies with urate - all correct colour ( has done that for 3 + years but only when in lay mode ). Moult mode has her do 'normal' well formed woops. She is currently in lay mode, and has layed ( I believe ). She happily squats, and has a fiery red comb and wattles. By midday she retires to her bed to sit, comes out if I appear, and towards the end of the day, does more sitting than standing.

I give up ... and here's why.

My girls have never liked currawong songs. They usually retreat to their coop on hearing them.

Looked out the laundry window today, and there was a currawong on their open coop door - taking stock of how safe it might be to help himself to layer pellets. And there was Mandy .... head right up, standing tall - with tail totally upright - and walking normally. Ready for action. I watched this scenario for 15+ minutes. If the currawong moved a muscle, her hackles would also move but not stand right up.

Will continue to monitor her. She preens herself quite a lot when sitting or standing. But Mindy also preens a lot. Molly RIR simply does not preen - I have never seen her do that.

I do NOT expect any comments ... Don't think there's much anyone could say !!!

But I will take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has offered suggestions, assistance and goodly advice about this 'conundrum' I have in the back garden.

Cheers ......

Thanks Fancy .... Mandy has had her wings clipped, only because I thought of it at the time she was having her beak snipped a little. One down and 2 to go sort of thing.

While you have answered my question about balance, I can assure you, no bird of mine, will ever see the insides of a show ring / cage. !!

Have you ever had a few moments of your busy time, to see just how Franny manages to get to your verandah. Very clever girl by the sounds of it.

Cheers .....

Good morning folks :frow

Congrats on the new layer SilkieChickStar.

Aaaaw Ashburnham your baby goat is so cute and sooo white!  Good luck with the hatches; nice looking selection of eggs.

Hoping you are able to locate some Phoenix jessbonnitcha and good luck with the hatch.  Your Derpyis a cutie!

Nice to see you again Henriettasmum.  Wow, you have been busy!  Sorry to read that your little one did not make it.  I agree it sounds like pasty butt and as always on this thread, you have already received great advice on treating it.

Good to see you also LuckysMum.  You also sound like you have been busy.  There are some nice looking chookies in those pics.  With chicken math, resistance is futile ;)

AustralorpsAU Your blues are beautiful!

MyHaven Lizzy is beautiful also .. she looks huge in that picture!

Luv1another you have some beautiful chickens also .. nice pics!  Wow, that is a big egg!

Nice pics also manualname.

kat79 as Fancy has mentioned, I have read that cracks in eggs can be sealed with clear nail polish but I have never tried it.  I hope the little one makes it.

satay I am still undecided on whether I am a fan of the NBN or not.  While hubby and son seem pleased with the speed, I have not really noticed a lot of difference.  I have, however, noticed that my remote session into work which used to drop out occasionally is now dropping out more frequently since the switch to NBN :th

Hey Anniebee sorry, no problems with the site here.

Well, as I type at 07:30AM in the morning, the girls are free ranging in the garden (unsupervised).  Why?  Because Crystal will not shut up!

I know I probably built a rod for my own back but, of late, it just seems to be ALL about the chickens and a minute’s peace is not going to happen.  A nice, new, big coop, covered run and many hours supervised free range on the weekend and every afternoon is not enough for Crystal, she wants out constantly!

As you know, she normally starts demanding to be let out anywhere after 2-3pm and for the past week or so we have had to let them out at that time and leave them unsupervised until I finish work at 4 because she is not letting up.  After feeding them at 06:00AM this morning, she starts demanding to be let out at 06:30AM and she is loud!  Of course letting her out was a bad move because now she is going to do that every morning.  So it looks like I now have unsupervised free range chickens with hugely increased risk of predator loss :(

I finally got my nbn up and running on Friday. I can notice only the slightest increase in speed so far but it would never compete with even the older version of broadband in Brissy but it is the best you can get out here..

It's a lot of things NBN but super fast sure ain't one of them. Ours is about ADSL2 speed but without the dropouts we used to get, only problem is I'm paying for the middle even faster speed just to get that. My in laws is slower than their broadband was, my parents is slower than their old mobile plan.

I live in hope that when its eventually labor in charge again they will give us the super fast cable all the way to the house just so they can prove Malcolm was wrong lol

I couldn't help myself!! I got these at the Moss Vale Poultry Auction yesterday. A trio of Silver Spangled Hamburgs. I got them for $30 each. They have settled down nicely now and I can't wait for some little chickys!! Still looking for some phoenix chickens and/or eggs.
