Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thank you for the tip, I don't have anything to use right now. I think I will hunt around for something tomorrow as I'm going to have to break her. It's her first laying season lol.

I have a feeling Daisy the D'uccle is headed down the broody path also. I was really enjoying all these eggs!

And beware of the guilt they'll make you feel too, they'll perfect that 'look' pretty quick, but stay strong ;)

Good morning folks

No news of note again except that after sort of playing at being broody in spurts, Cilla is full on broody again and back in broody jail.

SilkieChickStar appps has a small run for her broodies with no nest box in sight but as I do not have room for that, the crate definitely works for me.

Good morning all,

I would appreciate any thoughts anyone may have on my current chicken health issue. One on my French Marans has a swollen right side of the face, watery/frothy right eye, and did have some yellow discharge from her right nostril. All symptoms are contained to her right side of face only. I have quarantined her as a precaution. Her breathing sounds normal and there is no obvious visible sign of injury. She is moving around, eating and drinking - just rather quiet. I was thinking sinus infection/eye infection.

Any suggestions of what it could be or potential treatments? I have done the google thing but my heart starts racing as soon as I see IB, CRD and I haven't added any birds or changed anything - I would think it would be both sides of face/eyes/nostrils if it was something like IB or CRD.

Thank you in advance.

It certainly sounds like a CRD, I would be inclined to start her on a course of antibiotics. Keep an eye on the others. If it were just a swollen eye it could just be an injury but the discharge cancels that theory. Have you looked inside the ear on that side ?

Thank you FancyChookLady. I am headed straight online for some antibiotics now. While I had been trying to be calm and positive, given your knowledge and experience with birds I am freaking out now and treating the situation as worst case scenario

(I have about 30 other birds to try and keep well as well as a lot of new chicks that may not be going into the pen just yet now).

Well, I'm thinking I might need to go the automatic coop door route, as the girls are just making an obscene amount of noise in the morning these days. In winter it was ok as the sun got up later, but now the suns is getting up early it means they wait longer for us to let them out, and as they are pretty spoiled, they complain. And I hate getting up at the crack of daybreak. So to minimize the amount of time spent complaining, and stay in the neighbours good books (who have been very kind so far, I have checked with them) can anyone recommend a good automatic chicken or pet door? My largest chicken is a hybrid Australorp, bout 2 kgs.

They have NO idea just how good they have it, and how lucky they are. And silly me is still contemplating more of them.
