They are back! Butterflies everywhere! Again, I have tried to get a picture of them but they are not showing up which is sad because I wish I could share this .. it is beautiful!

Quote: Thanks, for awhile there I thought you might have been talking about New Zealand, but I wasn't sure if it was even considered part of "Australia"![]()
sjturner79, are you selling only, or hoping to pick up a few new additions as well?
A butterfly migration hooray! It's nice when we get temporarily overwhelmed with nice bugs, not grasshoppers or spiders![]()
Teila, yep when we're out the girls are locked up whether they like it or not.We also like you have plenty of plants for them to hide under, and I intend to add more. Plenty of shade for summer which seems to be here already....yay....ugh. And yes, I agree, it is a relief to know I'm not the only one whose chickens have their human wrapped around their wings lol.
This morning's been fun. I let everyone out early, no one had started making noise. I put Esmé in broody gaol, she just clucked softly and ate. Mabel however decided to go off her nut, apparently she was very concerned at Esmé's incarceration, even if Ezzie herself didn't care. She was only locked up until the others had laid their eggs anyway, then I closed the pens and let her out. It's nice to know Mabel is very caring when it comes to her flockmates, but I just can't seem to win when it comes to noise. Hopefully Ezzie's broody spell is broken tommorow. Another morning like this one? No thank you.
That is very funny - I do hope your ' horse ' has recovered from the excitement of meeting a dark hooman bizzo with silver bits and dangly things hanging from him. I agree - most likely the gear was what startled Thor. What is Thors' breed ? ( I know you've mentioned it somewhere before, but I can't remember ). With a name like that, he must be a big boy.
As Fancy said - dogs can smell fear - - - - so can horses, and to a degree, also cats ( I believe.) Wouldn't be surprised if chookies can too - ??but then absolutely nothing would surprise me about chookies. Nothing. So, perhaps your police visitor was indeed afraid of dogs.
The only reason I have to lock Miss Ruby away, when a plumber / electrician / whatever comes here, is because she tends to try and find a new toy or two in the open bag / cache. She sticks her nose in ( sticks it into everything actually - open drawers, open pantry, open fridge door, open cupboards, and grocery shopping bags ) ... and some servicemen do not take too kindly to their expensive equipment being seriously investigated by a big red GR dog.
She has a fearsome bark and growl - and if someone comes to the door that I don't know or am not expecting ( especially if male ) ... I say " Sorry, I can't open the door - I have my dog here and she's protective" ( do that for my own safety ) .... they back off very quickly and take what they are selling, next door. Have seen several not venture past the gate onto the patio, because of Miss Rubys' protective noises. And yet - she would not hurt a fly, has one of the lovliest temperaments one could imagine, as many have found, once inside.
Cheers. ....
The weekend was really hot out here. 41.1c saturday and 39,2 yesterday meant to be in for a week of hot weather with a chance of storms. I will believe that one when i see it.Good morning folksHey, did any other Brisbanites get inundated with butterflies yesterday? We had hundreds of them in our garden and maybe even thousands in the street; both white ones and coloured ones. All our flowering trees, bushes and vegetables were covered in them. I tried to get a picture but you could not see them in the picture against the vegetation. It was really quite beautiful. I have never seen anything like it and the girls jumped more times in one day than they probably have in their lifetimes
I don’t think they caught too many though. We had a white face heron visit yesterday also but luckily he stayed out the front and did not find the gold fish ponds:
Anniebee I know our weather differs greatly but I was shocked to hear that you had the heater on! As mentioned, we topped around the 35C mark yesterday and 31C predicted for today. Fizzybelle while not good for you, it is kind of comforting for me to discover that I am not the only one with loud, spoiled chickens
They wake me up around the 5am mark and this morning, because Crystal was already doing her duck impersonations, they got let out pretty much only minutes after breakfast. Sadly Crystal appears to have taught either Blondie or Cilla how to do duck impersonations also. I could hear Crystal this morning and a slightly deeper echo from I think one of those two. Also, Crystal is still picking on LuLu and when they are locked in, LuLu still hangs in the coop. So, like you, while I am not totally happy about it, they seem happier out and we will have to take our chances. Cats do not bother me too much. The girls seem to spot them before the cats spot the girls. Across the road’s cat has decided that visiting is not such a good idea [might have something to do with the multiple water pistol hits
]; next door’s cat is lead trained and never allowed to roam alone. The couple of times she has broken out, the girls have let us know. Mr Floppy ears does not seem interested in the girls and simply uses our yard as a route from Point A to Point B. My worry is dogs. We do not have any dogs wandering the neighbourhood as such and all local dogs are contained but in 6 years we have had 2 x Cav’s show up at the front door, 1 x Labrador and 1 x border collie. With the house being sideways on the block, unfortunately access from the front is not blocked. It is narrow and via the carport but still not blocked and tricky to block. So, if it wanted to, a dog could find its way into the back garden. We also have lots of vegetation for the girls to hide under. It is a worry but yep, it seems to be how they want it. Like you, someone is nearly always home and if not, they will stay locked up, no question.
