What breed are the birds with white lobes ?
Hello Fancychooklady

The are Light Sussex Hens (well 3 of them could possibly be Columbian Rocks due to their leg colour). I have only seen the earlobes go white a couple of times. They are nice and red most of the time.

Hi there. I thought they may have been silkies, their lobes go white or fade to white with age. Which part of the lobe are you referring to , do you have a pic?

Hello fellow Aussies!
I purchased some new chickens on the weekend, one of them is missing quite a lot of the feathers on tail and bum, and wing from others picking them out. She's about 16 weeks.
What can you recommend to help grow them back quickly?

Welcome alicexx .... nice to meet you here.

I gather you are referring to one chicken arriving with the feathers pulled out ( by other birds that are back where you purchased the chickens from ? ) .... You don't mention your other birds having a go at her.

I doubt there is anything that can be given to regrow feathers quickly. They grow back ( e.g. after moulting ) at the rate the bird is capable of, I believe. Some chickens re-grow feathers faster than others ( I have noticed ). Keep a watch on whether one of your other birds is doing the damage. If that is the case, I would separate them for a while ... just a thought.

Cheers ......

I was told when a hen is in pain her comb goes pale. Is it possible that she is happy with how she does things. She can obviously move when she wants too. I am the same I don't like to see an animal suffer, does she actually look like she's suffering or maybe just uncomfortable.

LuckysMum .... Mandys comb is a lovely red, and she happily laid another egg today, while purring her head off - ( about 6 eggs from her now, over 2.5 weeks ) - which is great, considering I thought she would never lay again. ... and you are right, she certainly can move when she wants to. Like yesterday, with the big run she did.

Fancy .... you too are right - I have to back off the worry and paranoia, and let Mandy be, let her do her own thing, which I believe is a preference for sitting - especially when something is not right for her in her stance. She does show discomfort at times, but handles that by sitting down, elevating her tail as she does so - which means to me, she is once again comfortable. She a is hog for food, and a real sticky-beak. Can't be left out of anything. She certainly is unique - as you mentioned .

She has quietened down, no longer the potential murderer of Mindy Araucana, as she was when they all first came here. But if Molly RIR is annoying, Mandy will give her a sharp peck.

Hope your evening was super pleasant, and that you didn't have too many repercussions in the morning, for the chookie let-out at 6 a.m..

I did reply before - ( a long winded comment as usual !!

) ... and I know you have had much experience with dogs. These dogs however, have now been 'blooded' and will almost certainly do it again - somewhere, somehow - if they get out and have the chance.

This is something that I would draw to the Councils' attention as well, as they most certainly do pose a danger to other animals, and their standing up to you - ( to protect their prey ) must come under the 'dangerous' category as well. Sad thing is, the dogs don't know they are now dangerous.

I wish you good luck with whatever you are able to do about this situation.

Mine laid and egg and sat on it until I confiscated it this arvo. Every time anyone walked past the pen today, you hear her scream out. For a little bird, she's scary when she wants to be lol.

That really sucks about the council. I think in future situations unfortunately you'd need to play up the potential danger to people angle rather than the proven pet angle. I mean these dogs got out, came onto your property and killed your birds, then threatened you. And the protecting their food argument? Uh, no they were killing your pets, pets are not a food source. I feel so angry and upset for you. I hope there's a solution to all of this. I really wish you the best with this, you and your poor chookies deserve justice, and you should feel safe in your own yard with your birds. Dogs might be dogs, no, if they got out then that is negligence on the part of the owner to not ensuring their property is secure.

Chook Newby, I don't think white earlobes in general are a problem, I have other girls with them, it's pretty common, I just saw what I think was actually dry skin which made me think otherwise. Plus I was tired, don't diagnose at night lol. Funny you should mention blueberries, I gave my girls the leftover ones from the punnet I finished off, and they acted like I'd given them lumps of coal to eat or something. If they were growing on a bush though, they'd be all for it. Oh well, more for the possum to eat later.

How about that rain this morning for those of us in Brisbane? I didn't let the girls out till a quarter to six, despite their protesting and insistence, I didn't think playing in a thunderstorm was a wise thing to do. More on the way apparently. The breeze right now is really nice too.

Thanks, I'll update you all. The "boss" is going to ring me. There is also state legislation controlling dangerous dogs, so I will write to the minister if the CEO of council doesn't do enough.

I know its not funny but it sounds really cute that she is screaming out when every anyone walks past:)

If white earlobes are not an issue then I wont worry too much next time I see one. Very interesting how your girls turned their noses up at blueberries... its an all in brawl to get one when Im throwing them around the yard for them... and its not just the chickens that love them, the dogs do too! All 4 chickens and both dogs bolt to get one

If it's white and crusty, then it might need attention, but white earlobes are pretty common and normal. It was funny her screaming out yesterday, and today as she's still broody. She might be over it tomorrow, though with the rain I'm not minding so much. Less chickens to round up.

It's funny how different flocks have different preferences. My girls actually do like blueberries I remembered, if they're in a muffin

At the moment though their favorite treat is alfalfa. Tomato is another big hit, as is chilled watermelon when it's hot, peas, corn, bread, rice, sunflower seeds (peeled because they're lazy little madam's) and of course whatever I am eating should I be foolish enough to eat in front of them.

Awesome, good to know you have some options. Here's hoping it goes your way.
