Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We were woken at about 2 am but a ruckus. On investigation one of the Light Sussex cockerels and 7 of the pullets gone. One of the hens (GLW X RIR) upset and limping around the yard.

I closed up the coop (something we don't usually bother with). In the cold light of day lots of feathers in the yard. Our flock is down to 5 hens one pullet and two cockerels.

Very sad.

I hope that's the end of that.

I'm having a hard time convincing my girls to lay in their new nesting box. I've tried fencing off the blackboy which is their current preferred laying spot and even putting a piece of chicken wire over the nesting spot but they are determined.

My latest tactic has been to build a small yard around the nesting box with no other desirable nesting spots but they're no match for my amateur fence building. Last night I moved the old cot that I use as a broody breaker and placed it upside down against the nesting box.

Cramped quarters for 5 chooks, I know, but much better than battery hens get and it was only to be for half a day. The result? Four escapees and four eggs under the blackboy!

We head out of town for a few days tomorrow so I'll try again when we return later in the week.

Anyway, here are today's eggs.

Any idea why one is so small?
Surely one of my 8 week old pullets hasn't started laying!

I would suggest putting some golf balls, ping pong balls or fake eggs in the new nest so they know that's what it's for. I don't know if it's possible for an 8 week old to lay. Mine start any time after 12 weeks

Yeah, I forgot to add that there's a plastic egg in each bay of the Taj Mahal. We've had to go out of town but will be back home on Thursday so I'll try again on Friday and over the weekend.

A few people have lost chickens to foxes out here in the last week or so.

Hello Fellow Aussies

Would love some advice, I've read sooo many things on the BackYard Chicken forums that i'm feeling overwhelmed.
I'm currently raising 4 week old Silkie Bantams in a hired brood box in my garage. I originally had 6 chicks (2 x Splash, 1 x Black, 3 x White) however lost 1 x white chick within 24hrs and a 2nd white chick a week later. They did not have pasty butt or appear to have respiratory problems, they just died

Yesterday I noticed my last white chick (Named Pigeon) was sneezing and wiping its beak a lot. I checked for running nose, bubbles in eyes, watery eyes but there was nothing. I gave it sugar water and some plain yogurt (no additives). Last night it got worse, the chick is no longer sneezing but sort of makes this weird cheap on a regular basis and it also looks like its struggling to take a breath. Not panting as such but making an effort to gulp a breath. I jumped on here and researched like crazy, i've checked temp which is sitting at 28 with not much fluctuation as brood box is in a closed in area. All other chicks seem to be fine, active, eating and drinking. I've given its some hard boiled egg and some more plain yogurt and sugar water.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Should I buy something from vets? If yes, what do you recommend?

Thanks so much

My marans actually lay much better in winter than summer so fingers crossed ill be able to start hatching again soon if the weather cools.

Lol those temps seem so odd to me. 20c to 25c is our winter day time temps. We do get ruddy cold over night though. You had best never come to qld in summer then anni. Reminds me of a funny story years ago my cousin got married in June in Townsville. It was actually quite nice at that time of year up there. Her brother in law came over for the wedding from N.Z and complained for the entire week that he was never coming back as it was too hot lol. Lucky he never visited in summer .

Haven't been to Queensland in decades. satay. Was married in June and honeymooned at the Gold Coast .... the weather was beautiful, but then I was much younger then and far more tolerant of heat. Used to sunbathe to dark brown in those days !! ... before all the ozone hole and UV rays bad for health.

Now at much older, cannot tolerate heat and humidity too well. But at least humidity is better than northerly winds. It is what I call unpleasantly hot today again - 26° with high humidity. Knocking on the door of Autumn, Summer has decided to return with a bit of vengeance. hmmm.

Cheers ~

That is just awful - sorry to hear this news.

With so many gone, it might have been a pack of dogs turned feral ? That was a problem in the Dandenongs a while back.
I believe they caught them - about 4 or 5 in the pack.

Foxes usually hunt alone - so I doubt one would be able take 8 birds in quick time.

to OldMacDonalds.

I do hope you find a solution to little Pigeons' problem.

Would the chicken do better in a cooler area - inside ? .... I don't know where you live, so have no idea what temps you are subject to. If in Victoria, it is especially humid and hottish at the moment, and one of my chickens is panting a little - they are all seeking shade - they usually deal well with heat.

Other than that - a trip to a Vet. ?

Cheers -

I had that happen and every one that got those symptoms died. I never took them to the vet cause i didn't have any money. You are running them at a really strange temperature though. They look young enough to be still having a 30 to 35 c heat source for nights and you could probably let them out for daytime.

Thanks Anniebee and Sjturner79
I'll be taking the chicks for outdoor excursion this afternoon.

Pigeon seems a little better this afternoon as i managed to get her some antibiotics, fingers crossed i caught it in time but now i'll just have to wait and see. The lady that i bought them from recommended Breathe Easy but i can't get that on the Sunshine Coast so will have to make do with the broad spectrum antibiotics.

You may be right about temperature, my garage is the warmest and safest place in the house which is why I've kept the brood box there but now that their feathers are coming in I'll need to watch the temperature. heat lamp has only been going on at night thanks to our lovely heat wave and I usually judge the chicks temperature happiness by how far away they are from heat lamp. Pigeon could not get close enough to it last night and this morning so guessing she was feeling cold.

I'm excited to get all the girls (Falcon, Hawke, Raven and Pigeon) outside this afternoon and see how they play on the grass. Fingers crossed the antibiotics start working for Pigeon and fingers crossed no one else falls ill.
