Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sorry i haven't been on much lately members who have been here quite a while would remember i lost my beautiful Zeus to bone cancer 2 years ago well unfortunately my beautiful gentle giant thor has been recently diagnosed with the same thing different leg and in the wrist not the shoulder like zeus. I am beyond sad that this horrible disease has not effected another of my gentle boys So trips to the vets and specialist have kept me quite busy .
The girls are pretty much on strike at the moment so not much to report there.
Hope everyone's girls are going along well.

Satay - .... So very sad to hear that your second beautiful dog Thor also has cancer. It is so very prevalent in dogs .. has risen at the same rate as in humans ( according to my Vet ) ... makes me wonder a lot. Our 3 Golden Retrievers and our one Shepherd ( GR's and German Shepherds are most highly prone to cancer ) have ultimately passed away from that ghastly disease. Just hoping so much that our 4th Golden, Miss Ruby does not go down that path too.

Have returned to Backyard Chickens from an old link I had as this site does not send me any notifications. Have missed out on much over quite a few months.

Again, sad to hear your news, and my thoughts are very much with you.

:hugs

Annie .....

Hello to all I know here ... ( you all know who you are ) ... and a big hello to those I have not met before. Having not had notifications at all, I rely on an old link, but due to some recent health issues, I have not been here ( or anywhere else for that matter ) for quite a while. The pages I would have to go back, would number in the dozens, so I will just have to take it from here.

Not much news in the backgarden coops - still have Mindy and Mandy ( I lost Molly last year very suddenly to something quite unknown ). The remaining two girls are approaching 6 years of age now, and I don't expect anything much from them in the future. They had begun to back off laying a bit, earlier this year. Being old and set in their ways, I don't want to introduce any new pullets at this stage.

Had a really bad egg in a batch of free range eggs recently. First one I have ever had, including before free range were available. I am thinking to candle them before use from now on ... am hoping that would show anything odd and dark - could anyone tell me if I am right with this idea ? I must say the free range eggs I have purchased have quite pale yolks, so am not very pleased with them. Purchased some cage eggs last week ( which I didn't like doing, but after the bad egg :sick !!! ) and their yolks are really rich and full of colour. Guess it is something they are fed to make them like this. They look beautiful, but ...... !

Cheers all -

I don't get notifications either so ii finally bookmarked the page so i can get back here.
Thank you for your kind words Anni :) Cancer shore is horrible, I too have heard of so many more cases of every type of cancer in dogs lately it really does seem not fair to them and their beautiful natures. So far Thor is still able to get around ok the vets have him on some good medicine so he seems quite comfortable at the moment. I also have him on canine hemp oil which is full of lots of good minerals etc.

Mine have backed off laying at the moment and i dread having to buy eggs. Fingers crossed they get back to it before that happens. Lost my last marans girl last night. Hubby didn't realise she was not in the pen when he shut them up last night., I am guessing that a fox or something got her as she is no where to be seen today but i did get her egg from the garden shed this morning( yesterdays egg). I have a brother who comes to stay sometimes and he has disabilities i have to check eggs when he has been up as he is very vigilant on finding eggs and sometimes will find an egg i have missed and well thats not pretty when you crack them open.
Float testing the eggs would be your best idea anni.

Hi everyone. It's getting to that time of year when everyone is having health issues. I hope you all are healthy at the moment.
satay I'm so happy you found your marans. I am sorry to hear about Thor. Our old shepherd Bear is not so healthy anymore now either.

I haven't had to buy eggs this year. I am getting 1 every second day from the silkies (5) and just starting to get 1 egg every few days from my 3 other girls. The Plymouth x australorps have not missed a beat they lay an egg each everyday they are about 1 year old. Ducks are laying too.
I have this site saved on my favourites but I wish we had the old one back this one is not very user friendly.
I hope everyone stays healthy and safe through the winter.

Hi everyone.
After having spent my teens living and working (reluctantly, I might add) on a broiler farm, I didn't think that I would ever have chooks myself.
My daughter hounded me for years, selective hearing is a great Dad trait...

I had my huge avocado tree pruned (400 avocado's each year) and with the yard opened up, I thought why not ..
Last month I bought a flash coop and a trio of hybrids (white, black & red). Then.... I thought I might want more ... So I got a cheap 2nd coop on gumtree... Bargain $80 for the run a pair of pvc feeder and drinker, 2 hanging feeders, 2 hanging drinkers and 1/2 a bag of pellets.
I then purchased a lavender Araucana... Who turned out to be a single comb x and lays cream eggs.

Long story short the produce store finally supplied a replacement for free.

I also purchased 2 silkie bantam x and a beautiful Plymouth Rock.

I DID have a garden full of pak choy, then the 1m fence went up. After 3 of the chooks donned their flight gear, I added another 1600mm of antibird mesh and all is good.

I have added LED lighting on time clocks and we are getting a dozen eggs every 2 days.

I am enjoying the meditative time with my girls.

I signed up for waste veges and bread from woolies and use this to supplement the feed.

Currently using Riverina Red Label pellets, Riverina coarse mash, cracked corn, black sunflower seed, grass and kitchen scraps. They are very spoilt.

Who am I?
Bruce Stevens, 52, married 30 yrs in Sept to my wonderful Tania. I am an ex high school science master, an ex public servant (thanks Campbell Newman), I operate a curriculum consultancy and an online travel planning agency.

Where am I?
Victoria Point, Redland City, Qld. On Moreton Bay, 30 min. SE of BrisVegas.

My girls...
Marilyn... White commercial
Wilma. .. Red commercial
Betty.... Black commercial
Agnes... Lavender Araucana x
Pebbles .. Plymouth rock
Georgie. . Black silkie x
Ginger.... Red silkie x
Gertrude .. Lavender Araucana
