Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi Guys,

From the 'burbs in Sydney. Got our 1st 4 chicks in August. We now have 11 POL pullets (ok 9 and a couple of possible roosters) and looking to more...
Mainly Wyandottes, 3 mixed breed layers and a Plymouth rock.

scoopy82 Horse and cart is a wonderful idea.. I wish it were possible in todays busy fast paced life style.

and to the aussie section of the forum. What are your council regulations like up there? So many people keeping chooks in the suburbs more and more councils are looking at the numbers people are allowed to keep. Thats a great thing in my book. The more chooks people keep in their own yards - the less need for egg farms- free range or battery type.

I have a horse and cart!

Well, ponies and cart actually. I need to break them in but haven't got the harness yet so it's a work in progress.

I think I should be able to pick up the weekend paper no problem at the little local store and once they have some experience I should be able to go shopping in the small town near us as long as I can convince DH to come with me and hold them. Unfortunately these days I wouldn't trust just tying them up outside, too many people have no idea how to behave around horses and there are always some idiots who will deliberately annoy animals.

DH says it would be embarrassing to go in the cart, I don't see why?

Sadly I think a horse and cart will never again be a favored method of transport, but yes- a great novelty for people to see - especially those from the city out for a country drive.

How are your new years eggs going Rare breed?? I didnt ever put my details into the thread...and just as well too since my little bundles of fluff seem to be all coming out early. The eggs were set after a few days warmer weather- so I think they may have started developing before I collected them. 3 of the 6 were already hatched this morning when I left for work- they were all set late on the the 3rd of Dec meaning they should have been hatching New Years eve.

Do you have plans for the big night- or are you going to stay home having a quite one glued to the incubator?

Out already? There is a bunch of people on the thread with them popping out early too.

Mine are still cooking, I've had a few temp spikes, one disastrous one wiped out half my eggs, thank goodness I'd set heaps. My Hover-Bator has been really acting up this hatch.

I think it will be back to a hatcher only after this.

I think a quiet night New Years is a good idea. I can sit in comfy air conditioning (the forecast is for 38) and watch the fireworks on TV. Hopefully I'll have fuzzy butts popping out for entertainment too.

to all who have just joined! Also to wish everyone a Happy, succesful New Year with lots of happy hatchings and show ribbons! Whatever you are doing tonight Keep safe, but HAVE FUN!!

Thank you Wooklet- and I hope where ever you are at midnight- that you are enjoying yourself and staying safe.. That goes for everyone actually...and i wish you all a great 2012

AS for me- I will be sitting in the ducks night pen when the clock ticks over. There is an annual fireworks display let off just 100 metres from my house and they get upset so I like to at least be with them to try and keep them calm. I have gone out in previous years- leaving at around 11.30 to get home but this year feel much safer staying at home and not having to be out on the roads.

RareBreedFancier - all 6 were hatched well before the due time. I now at least have them here to sit with tonight. Probably more fun than watching the incubator waiting for them to hatch anyway. How are yours going- sorry about the ones you lost. I did that with my Hova when I got an IM- but now I hatch in it as well so sold off the hova all together.

Temp forecast for Melbourne 41 degrees today. Not looking forward to the day ahead. I have covered the babies pen to give them more shade and will set up a fan in the shed in case they want to be inside- not that it will be cooler. Frozen bottles of water in the freezer ready to go outside in the pools later on. I fully expect my water consumption here today to go through the roof. I have some cages set up so I can bring duckies inside to the lounge room where the air conditioner is if needed as well. I think I have everything covered- but on a day like this- you just never know what to expect.

Hope you dont all have such high temps where ever you are- and that you and the birds all make it through.

to the newcomers and howdy to the peeps I haven't met yet.

Quick question... This is my girls' first summer and they're not enjoying the heat this week (40+) I've given them loads of fresh water but am wondering if anyone has any other ideas about keeping them comfortable? Should I be worried they might perish or are chooks ok with scorching temps??

Hope everyone has a fabulous 2012!!
