Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I have seen some of the footage... it doesnt matter if its hear in Oz in January.... or somewhere else it always heartbreaking to see the horrible images- especially when they show animals.

Does anyone on here read Grass Roots or Australasian Poultry?

Hello Duckyfromoz,

I read Australasian Poultry but not Grass Roots. I'm more of a fan of Gardening Australia and Organic Gardener. Australasian Poultry is not only an informative publication, but a great source for researching Australian suppliers of poultry books, medication, incubators, feeders and breeders.

I also buy Chickens - The Essential Poultry Publication which is a US magazine and Your Chickens which is a UK publication. I like to catch up on 'Foreign Chicken Affairs' so to speak, plus they're both in colour print.

Just found this thread after posting in the 'introduce yourself' thread. I'm originally from Queensland but have been living in Melbourne for the last 20+ years. I am so over all the rain and cold, and I sure the girls I'm trying to bring up are also. I think I recognize some of the forum members from the BYP forum too, so good to have so many knowledgable people to call on when a problem/question arises and needs a speedy answer. I'm just going out to let the girls out now while there's a break in the weather, pity there's no sunshine to go with it....

Jackscrap - welcome to one of the Aussie threads. I am from Melbourne too. it was rather cold the last few days- I really had trouble warming up last night - first time I really felt that cold this winter.

I do! Please tell us why you asked??

Oh good...well at least two people read it...

My daughter and I played host to a lovely man who wanted to interview us with the view to doing a segment in one of the mags on raising ducks as pets in a suburban backyard.

The photos will be terrible...some were done yesterday at the Essendon Poultry show in the rain... But hey- I was absolutely honored to be asked- and cant wait to see my Stevie- Ray get her face in a magazine... Pity she cant see it for herself- but I will be proud enough for the both of us. ( Stevie-Ray is my beautiful blind duckie. )

Duckyfromoz...........Sorry for my tardy reply, We are actually from WA. (still cant believe I am living in Siberia.......I mean Victoria.)
All our Gold came from WA from Esperance to Meekatharra. We camped out for up to 6 weeks at a time. Shiploads of Gold over there.......still, we retired on it at 50.

Cheers.....The Dog

Hello Duckyfromoz,

Your interview with your daughter about raising ducks, sounds like it will make for an interesting read in Australasian Poultry. I only have chickens myself, but I'm curious to learn more about keeping ducks. The current edition of Australasian Poultry focused a lot on poultry shows around the nation, so it will be good to get back to articles which share tips from experienced poultry keepers.

I look forward to seeing Stevie-Ray. Wouldn't it be great if she made the cover and in colour?

Hello and a very warm welcome to you Jackscrap, (no pun intended)

I'm on the Gold Coast myself, but we too are experiencing a bout of cold weather and it's not something I'm used to! I can only imagine how Melbourne must be like when you describe it being cold and rainy... brrr!

I was so worried about my small flock of four when the weather took such a sudden change, that I invested in woolen seat-belt covers and used them to wrap around their perches. They took to them quite nicely. So much so, that in the morning when I open their coop door, they're hesitant to leave at first. Who can blame them, when their little toes are so snug and warm?

I would send some sunshine your way but it seems that we're not living up to the title of Sunshine State here in QLD at the moment. More rain and wind are on the way starting tomorrow.

I would love that!! She is such a sweet girl - it really would be fantastic.

Wooklet- I have no idea- but I will let you know when I do find out. It may not go in at all yet....

The Big Dog- oh well...doesnt matter where it came from so much- I really do miss getting out there...hopefully August will see me have some more spare time on weekends.

Ducky it's great you got to do the interview. It has been freezing here the last few nights too where we have been in the minuses for a few nights. It seems to be taking for ever to warm up during the day too. It's currently 3c at 8am... Yuck.. I am not a fan of winter at all. I am counting down the days til spring i tell ya. I got a dozen cochin eggs in the mail yesterday that my cousin has trusted me to incubate for her. They are show quality large fowl eggs. I can see it gunna be a long 21 days. So much more stress when you are hatching for someone else lol. Hope you all stay warm and dry.

Satay- come on down here for a holiday- the last week is really the first of real winter weather like I remember it. Although- being in an office to work now- I am nice and warm all day- in previous years I have been working in an " unwarmed" environment. Certainly makes a huge difference.
