Australians - Where are you all????

I noticed the link and am impressed. Sounds to me they may take having spent a fortune already into account. Would b so good if they can find problem/answer!
Just hope it's not where Coco is now!
Think they should set up in Adelaide

Ducky and GFG I have been wondering about incubator possibility for future but first stumbling block is I'd probably get lotsa roosters! What do u do in that case? Live remote n just keep?? Male ducks n guinea fowl no problem? Trying to not eat any animal

This is going to sound harsh but Don't do it.
I hate roosters. They make your hens life hell and most times, yours too.
My roosters force me to be violent, and I hate that. But when you have a huge rooster soaring at you with spurs out at the ready there's nothing else you can do but kick it or hit it with whatever your holding. I went into a run to lock up the ladies and the rooster in there started attacking me. I was smart enough to have brought a rake in with me so I had to hit him with the rake, multiple times as it kept coming for me. After I'd got it out the door and locked myself in I felt like a criminal. Like an animal abuser. But what else am I supposed to do.
I'm also treating a hen at the moment who has a huge patch of skin ripped off her body from the rooster mounting her. And she's in with 13 other hens who ALL have bald backs, even with saddles. How does 1 rooster do so much damage. And when the roosters are together with no hens they mate with each other. I have roosters that look exactly like a naked neck from the other roosters grabbing at their neck trying to mate with them. My whole chicken stuff is a chaotic mess, I hardly have the emotional strength to tend to the chickens anymore.
AND ITS ALL BECAUSE OF THE ROOSTERS.

Cause I was a softie and didn't get them killed.
Unless you have someone who will take roosters; Do not hatch. I learnt the hard way.

On a good note, a guy that I know (and will love after this) is coming this weekend and taking all the roosters that I'll give him. So I'll finally have a quiet, working, less violent and generally better over all chicken area.
And these blue Australorps that I'm hatching, they WILL be killed at the right time so that they're actually edible. Unlike the ones now that we left too late and the family won't eat them.
Can you tell I'm a little emotional about about the rooster subject

Wow, thanks so much for all the vet info guys. I did call Lort Smith and had one visit down there. Saw a vet called Tristan who is a bird enthusiast but not a specialist. Will definitely ask aout Sasha next time I need someone! For now though, it's looking like we might be near the end of a very painful road. I went to visit Coco in the hospital last night and managed to squeeze about 3 minutes of time from the vet before she rushed off. Basically she thinks it's cancer. She wants to confirm with her colleague who will be in at middday today but she wasn't at all positive about the outcome. I'm absolutely devastated and am sitting here at work sobbing at my desk, trying to get it all together before my students arrive. I brought my little baby home and dad's going round to my place to let them out to enjoy the sunshine today so at least she can enjoy what's left of her short little life.

My heart is broken for Coco and also for Matilda who has been pacing her coop and calling out not stop. I also need to think about the best way to introduce new birds for Matilda so any suggestions would be welcome - do we wait till the inevitable happens, or get a few straight away? Should we get chicks or pullets? Same breed or different?

On a brighter note, Matilda left a little present for us today - her first egg! It's like a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Thanks again for all your support, it's a really nice little community we have here on BYC and definitely good therapy for an awful situation...

Sorry to hear about the probable diagnosis CM. My dog Coco also had cancer and was given 3 months to live but hung on for another 2 years and still looked like enjoying life. She was a big dog (ridgeback x) and 14 was a good age for her to reach without her diagnosis.

Only advice can give re Matilda is to get another same type chook. Have heard that single chooks get lonely and don't really mix in with other types much at all.

Guinea thanks for all ur advice against roosters. That is the whole thing I have against getting into hatching. We don't need no roosters round here feral or not. Already got a Raptorchook as it is! Let alone someone meaning to hurt me.

I just wondered what people did when they hatched roosters cos it never occurred to me to keep em

Well the eggs arrived today.

They all have detached aircells

two are smashed and one is scrambled.
There was nothing written on the package saying it was fragile even though I told her to write extra ( thinking she was going to write stuff anyway). Even rude post office lady said a sarcastic good luck after I said " be carful. They're eggs" after she ripped the package out of the pigeon hole thing it was in.

What should I do? Should I email her and request she send me more? or just leave it and hope a few hatch?

Im going to have to completely hatch them out in the incubator now because of the detached aircells.

GFG I think u should email her and tell her they arrived damaged. I have no idea if she'll do anything to compensate you but she may change her delivery procedures or even carrier.

How many eggs did u buy? Are they very expensive? Maybe in future u could request a different carrier even if u have to pay extra?
