Australians - Where are you all????

Sorry - I cannot answer your last two questions, but I CAN say how much I enjoyed your post - it was so amusing to read about the 'pairing' of Cilla and Whitney. Well written, well done. Good luck with your two little darlings - and no doubt more chickens in the future.

Cheers ---
Thank you Anniebee :)

I am so grateful for this site .. I now have the chance to meet people who will not look at me with the 'they are just chickens' expression and who will understand totally how you can't help but love chookies and their antics.

PS. Cilla and Whitney are now the best of mates (unless food is involved) and if I have anything to do with it, are going to live happily ever after :-D

Regards

The above post I put up an hour ago. Went outside just now, to check on my 'girls' .... and found that Mandy Welsummer had LAID HER FIRST EGG !!

It was pale tan with a few speckles on it - rather like a paler version of a Barnevelder egg. I expect, as she gets a bit further along in laying, Mandy's eggs will become darker - to the terra cotta colour or dark brown that the welsummer usually lays.

I am thrilled with my now, 3 eggs today.

Congratulations. !!!!!!! Yay
I want a Welsummer one day. I have five baby Barnies at the moment.
Woo hoo Anniebee .. very deserving of a happy dance! :-D

O.K. I love in N.S.W, so wasn't asking to see if i could get them was just curious as I have seen some ridiculously priced Light Sussex recently and wasn't sure what was going on.
Will you sell them at POL?
I was going to wait until I was 100% sure what sex they were- however, today I have 2 sussex chicks who have either had a fight with each other or both been pecked at around the head until they are bleeding. Small cuts on the comb, wattle, head and edge of mouth. My chooks all have the run of my garden so they can keep well away from each other if they want to - I have noticed Nell (Mum) has been quite nasty towards all of her growing chicks - I had assumed she was just chasing them off of food so they would be more self sufficient - but now I'm not too sure.
The 2 chicks in question are the most friendly and the ones in the photo below.

I believe the one in my hand is male (larger red comb and wattles but no crowing yet at nearly 10 weeks) the other is the largest of this hatch, has a larger but pink comb and I was hoping it was a female. The other 2 birds have very small and pink combs. You think they might be both male and fighting because of it?

Hi All
I am new to the forums, I live is Brisbane Queensland.
I owned chooks when I was a kid but lost interest in my teenage years, I am now excited to be getting some for my own children but I am having trouble finding Day old Silkies around my area and a breeder that is willing to take back a rooster if we get one.

Welcome Sarah and hello from the Northside
I am also fairly new to the site and a born-again-chookie-mum, having two little banties (not sure how old but not laying yet and one is still peeping). Have you tried Gumtree for your babies? While the majority are not breeders, I have seen what look like loved chookies looking for new homes, including silkies.
Good luck with the adoption, looking forward to hearing updates and seeing the baby photos

Welcome Sarah ... Noticed you are wanting Silkies which are so gorgeous, adorable, cuddly and fluffy. It's the ' fluffy ' parts that concern me. I hope I am not being an old mother duck here, as you might well have had a lot of experience with Silkies. I found out the most difficult way, that they shouldn't be allowed to get wet - their fluffy feathers allow the water right through to their ultra-thin skin, which then can give them a chill and resulting infection. I lost my little Moppit ( she's my Avatar ) that way. Just saying ... that if ever I have another Silkie or several silkies, they will be kept indoors in a pen, and permitted outside only in the warm weather ( which you have plenty of up there ) or on dry days... and never again be permitted to get wet, which is what happened to Moppit after a massive storm here one night - and the coop leaked. It was horrid to have to have her put to sleep by our Vet. Just a thought for you before you embark on your Silkie project - they are adorable, but so very fragile a bird. Even temperatures, warmish surroundings etc. and lock 'em up during your rainy months. Have had some helpful hints from an English lady about them - and their fragile wee constitutions. They are definitely not a strong bird. Good luck in finding some of these beauties for your children - they will be a delight ... and you have a good start living in Queensland where it is so warm - most all of the time. Cheers ....

Hi all
Thanks for the welcome, Anniebee thank you for your concern and I understand it is meant in a caring way but you are right I have had silkies before, I tried getting in contact with the breeder I used to deal with but Im not sure if she is still around, I plan to have the silkies as very spoilt pets, I have raised them from chicks before as well as had some retire to me from the breeder i spoke of, as one little girl was special needs she had a misaligned beak so she lived out her days with me,

Hi, I'm also on the northside if Brisbane. I got my Silkie way the other side at Bucan. I found the breeder on gumtree and she said she'd take it back if it was a rooster. I got her at quite a few weeks old though and thankfully she is a girl. Do you want baby babies? Where are you Sarah, The northside produce always has beautiful Silkie pullets - I'm always tempted but am over my limited already with babies I have to find homes for.

Hi MyHaven
Where is the Northside Produce? the only produce store I know of is at Deception Bay and they dont sell animals, there used to be one at Caseldine, but it is no longer there. I am rethinking the baby babie idea as I think I may get too attached, maybe pullets would be the way to go.
