G'Day from Taigum in QueenslandI am new to the site and also a newbie Cochin bantam mum. I have two little girls Cilla and Whitney. 3 weeks ago I started out with Cilla and Ash who I purchased at a produce store. Sadly, after two weeks Ash got sick and she passed away on Sunday morning. Cilla was stressing by herself so I made a mad dash back to the produce store and bought Whitney. OK, so it wasn't love at first sight, Cilla was giving Whitney a bit of a hard time all day and come bed time, Cilla decided that she now wanted to be friends with Whitney but Whitney was having nothing to do with the 'evil chookie'. After some gentle persuasion I managed to get them to roost together and when I checked on them later, Whitney had her head snuggled under Cilla's wing .. a friend commented that it was probably a headlock lol. I am only guessing they are Cochins by the images on the web, I really have no idea except that they are black with feathers on their feet, Whitney has some brown feathers around her neck. I think Whitney is still only very young as she is squeaking rather than clucking. I have a couple of questions which may sound silly but #1 any ideas of how I can tell how old they are? and #2 Is there a chance that Whitney may lose her brown feathers when she gets older?![]()
PS. I love my little girls they have so much character![]()
I have something to share with you all. If your interested of course.![]()
Look In my signature and go to the one called Pew Pew. This is my very first article I hope you enjoy it. If you have time.![]()
I read all of your article about Pew Pew and enjoyed it very much. Loved the photographs that went with comments and all throughout.
Well done - nice to read some personal experiences. One very special rooster is Pew Pew, and I guess he'll get to know what to do or not
to do, as he gets older ? Good luck. Cheers .....
Hi all - the first question "where are all the Aussies" has been answered well and truly with now over 3000 posts. I am in Upwey, Victoria and am also fairly new to raising chickens.
Began last October with the purchase of 1 x Barnevelder, 1 x RIR, and 1 Welsummer from a breeder up here in the hills, to which was added an Araucana and a Silkie as gifts for my birthday. Sadly, my darling little silkie, Moppit, ( avatar photo ) caught an upper respiratory infection about 2 months back, and recovered somewhat, only to go down with something else. They are so very fragile a bird - and she just didn't have the strength and resilience, so I had to have her put to sleep by the Vet, before her organs began shutting down completely. It was a very sad day.
So now I have just the four, two of which are laying every day, that's Milly (Barnevelder) and Molly - the RIR. Mandy our Welsummer seems as though she wants to lay, but has yet to deliver. Mindy Araucana I rather think might be a bit odd - she can't make up her mind what she is, as occasionally she crows, but her feathering is mostly that of a hen - and not of a rooster, except for her hackle feathers which are a bit more pointy and sharp than a hens !! ?? I did ask on another thread here, if there was such a thing as a hermaphrodite chicken - and apparently there is, so maybe that's what she is. Not a sign of laying from her whatsoever. She's a real pet though, and loves a cuddle. She is separated from the other 3, as they don't seem to like her and attack her if they get half a chance. I am not into murder in the chook 'ouse.
My girls all moulted in the hot summer we had here in Victoria, and the two layers are still producing, even though it's Autumn and traditionally ( so I believe ) they back off somewhat during Autumn and Winter, and also can moult at that time. Am waiting patiently for Mandy to lay - she certainly is showing all the signs and sounds of it, but is still 'learning' how to nest - LOL.
Nice to meet all the Aussies here ... it is a great site, and has a lot of great information ( along with a few old wives tales, or so I have been warned about by a U.S. breeder ). At least we all have the same thing in common - CHOOKS. They are such fun, and very relaxing to watch as they get up to their little tricks.
Cheers,
Anniebee![]()
The above post I put up an hour ago. Went outside just now, to check on my 'girls' .... and found that Mandy Welsummer had LAID HER FIRST EGG !!
It was pale tan with a few speckles on it - rather like a paler version of a Barnevelder egg. I expect, as she gets a bit further along in laying, Mandy's eggs will become darker - to the terra cotta colour or dark brown that the welsummer usually lays.
I am thrilled with my now, 3 eggs today.![]()
