Australians - Where are you all????

Pics
The new one has been given a workout- and the best news is- it has fixed all the hatching issues I have had.

I had a very eventful weekend...All turned out ok in the end...but it just seemed to be one disaster after another... I can laugh now its all over- and dont mind if any of you get a laugh out of the unfortunate series of events over the weekend.

Saturday my broody duck left the nest to go play in the rain and mud..I ended up taking her eggs after a few hours. I candled them before putting them into the bator but saw no movement. But all turned out OK as later in the evening I checked again and all 5 eggs were moving again nicely.

12.30 am the power went off... I put 8 just hatched ducklings in bed with my daughter and put the 11 one week old ducklings in my bed and one egg half way hatched went down my pajama top. But all turned out OK as the power was only off for an hour and a half and everyone survived without getting chilled.

Sunday I went up to my block of land to fix a fence and took 4 ducks up as a fellow from Bendigo had placed an order for them 2 months ago. Anyway- plenty of rain up there meant I couldnt get all the way to my gate down a dirt track. Parked the car half way down and went for a look...Lucky I got there early as the fellow turned up 2 hours early to get the ducks..no real problem there...but later I decided that I needed to get the car close to the shed and decided to drive through the block where there was no road. I was ok for a while...as I had checked out how wet it was part way down...but then things got mushy...so I turned the car around thinking I wouldnt risk it...well...too late...turning the car I ended up getting bogged... But no real problem there as I called the RACV . I put down some shavings and hay from the boxes I took the ducks up in- and nearly had the car out by the time the fellow turned up- but I was just so concerned about getting home in time to feed all the ducks and ducklings and check on the one last egg that was still to hatch. I was actually disapointed that the car wasnt covered in mud... At least it would have looked a little more impressive- but this way- I didnt have to go to a car wash before being able to drive home..
Driving home I was so ready for the weekend to be over so nothing else could go wrong.......and got home to find the load of washing I put on just before I left wasnt finished the tub was full of water and the laundry floor was flooded. I couldnt find anything blocking the sink....and cleaned up what is hopefully the last mess for the weekend.

But at the end of all that- I candled a special egg I have in the bator. It was laid on the 12th of Sept- and sat on the bench for ages as I was going to throw it out with the next batch of eggs I either didnt set or had to remove from the incubator. It was a double yolker. On a whim I put it in the incubator- just to see... And against the odds- I have found both embryos are developing. I dont know how long things will go well for the two of them- but fingers crossed. I will have to add a few photos.. I have to up load them first.

Today I took my daughter to the Titanic exhibition at the museum..It was OK..But I enjoyed the one about 12 years ago that I saw in Newcastle much better. I have always been intrigued by the history of the ship- and the tragedy that happened- and my daughter shares my passion. We are going to start working on an unfinished model I bought years ago of Titanic - It nearly a meter in length- so it will take us a while to finish it.

Wow! That was a long post! Sounded like you had your share of fun and disasters over the weekend, the wahing machine would have been the last straw! Your Titanic model sounds good, did you get it at the exhibition? When you've finished it you'll have to put a picture up. LOVE your pics they are all so cute and seem to be posing for the camera.
,and congrats on the double embryos - remember I though that I may have had one once? But it was not to be - when is it due? And what chance is there of it hatching?
I had an argument with the manufacturer about the incubator, told him I thought that it was no good, and that none of my eggs would hatch - I am now sitting here with egg all over my face(!),should have

it shut! Like you I have had an incredible hatch, they're still coming and we have 25! Mainly Polish - hope I can sell them or I'm going to be overrun by chickens.
We had a chick die today though, I thought that she had been unwell for a couple of days and this a.m. I found blood in her droppings,so I dosed her with Sulphquin and put her by herself. She went downhill rapidly, and by this evening she was dead. The worry is that in the end her droppings looked normal, so I hope that she had nothing nasty or contagious. Poor little thing,I get upset when I loose any of them.

Oh,dear, one of my newly hatched chicks is blind. It has not been eating or drinking, and when I picked it up I saw that one eye was closed and the other wasn't focusing - so what do I do? Is it worth keeping it alive, has anyone ever had a blind chicken/duckling? I have given it some water on a dropper, and pushed a few grains of crumble down its' throat. but how often should I do that? And how do I teach it to eat by itself? Help!

It was a long post...so much happened.... But things are a little quieter again... well..kind of. I have more ducklings hatching AGAIN!!! And nearly lost a little gosling tonight. It got into the pool and couldnt get out. Their was only two inches of water in it- the poor thing fell on its back and couldnt gt up again. All the ducks were making a terrible noise and I ran outside to see what the problem was- Lucky I found her. I think they were trying to get my attention as they havent made that much noise all at once ever before.

I bought the titanic model years ago but have had it stored away half finished for about ten years. Time to finish it I think.

The double yolker is still looking good. I dont know the exact date..I forgot again when I put it in. But its been in about 11 days I think. Funny thing is it was already over ten days old when I set it- so I was amazed it started developing at all. Hoping all goes well over the next two weeks- but I think I may have to help them out if things get that far with it.

Good on you for standing your ground with the incubator. They should know about it if people arent happy with the product.

Here is a pic of Stevie- ray. She hatched Blind and is the sweetest little girl.

She has a protector- Noggin a young drake who will not leave her side. Its so cute to watch them together. She has a forever home here with me- and I guess he does now too. She manages very well - and comes wandering over to me when she hears my voice. I was sitting outside with her for a while after work today and got lots of special kissed and had my ears nibbled for ages.

Hey there GFG... Good to hear from you. I posted on your thread..But just wanted to say here too - they should be fine - I have heard of hens leaving the nest for half the day a few days running and chick still hatching from the eggs.

The little blind chick died overnight

Oh wooklet- I am so sorry about your little one. It may be for the best in the long run- Disabled animals arent for the faint hearted. It can be distressing tat times to see them- and wonder if you have done the right thing allowing them to live.

Reggie is doing Ok. Still very thin- but at least some of her feathers are growing back. She has a bald patch on her tail and her neck from constant rubbing when she hops around. But at least now she can go outside with me since the weather is warmer.

All is still looking good in the double yolker egg!!
