Australians - Where are you all????

I got 2 dozen. The eggs themselves were cheap, only $25 a dozen. The postage was $25 too. So overall $75. Not too bad. I guess I was just expecting them to be perfect, and they're not, so i'm a little disappointed.

I'm disappointed for u too! I think it would have been less disappointing if it had been marked fragile and u could believe everyone tried to b careful. Does seem wrong no fragile marking. Let's hopes those three were roosters n the only ones How many days to chirping?

Thanks Guinea! I still haven't been able to see it myself because my computer's decided to rebel against me

Sorry about your eggs dilemma. Post office woman sounds a bit sour-faced to me. I'd get at least a little compensation, if not a full refund. Good luck with the hatch.

I was just wondering about that yesterday.

I put the eggs in the incubator last night. Your supposed to let them sit for 24 hours but I'm not going to turn them for four days because of the aircells. So I didn't think it mattered.
Plus, the faster I got them in there the faster I get to tell if at least a few are viable

In other news, I called a farm and they have some 14-16 week old Australorps and Buff or Light Sussexes that I can introduce as new friends for Matilda. Her advice was that at that age they'll be big enough not to defend themselves but young enough to know their place in the pecking order.

Anyone agree/ disagree? It sounded good to me... Which breeds would you guys go for? Any preferences?

What breed is Matilda? I'd get at least one her kind for her. Like the idea of both Australorp and Sussex. Think I like the look of Orpingtons too! Not sure if I'll ever get into different breeds or not. Know they usually lay less than my New Hams but someone suggested they lay years longer to make up for it. Does anyone know??

Am sorta tempted to have a thousand hens (but can't sob sob) but torn whether to diversify or not

Influx of newbies recently. Looks like the chicken bug is getting around here too

We put our chickens together from the day we get them. They come in pairs, each two years apart in age, but there's never been any problems. Little ones learn to stay out of big ones' way and bully those younger than them. We usually take care of the newest for a while, but after that they get along swell

I heard buffs are friendly. I'd go for buffs.
